Castledamph
March 2 99

Dear James
I was in Strabane
on Tuesday and I went in and
asked all about the law
its rather an expensive buisness [business?]
if you have got =B =A
to your name you would have
to serve three years. as an
apprentice and pay £100 s d
then pay £75 as licence Duty
and attend in Dublin two or
three months in the year for two years
to hear or make lectures -
then if you would not have
B - A - to your name you would
have to serve 5 years and pay the
same amount of money
So you see it takes capital
as well as learning to come out
a Solicitor its not much wonder
the [they?] charge plenty in a case
Houston charged £1 1s 0 that Day
in Omagh in tom tom [sic] case and had
very little to do - I am afraid
you need not think of law
The [There?] are any amount of solicitors
in Omagh and Strabane now
some of them not very good
P obrine's [O Brien?] son had to give it
up he was no good, Mr Conroy
told me on Tuesday that it
took The full of my hat to Bring
him out and was no use he had
no power of speech and he
told me the same as the atorney [attorney?]
told with regard to the cost

J J S [John James Smyth?]

So Good By [Goodbye?]

John J Smyth
