My Dear James-
As I am not able
to be in The plumfair [Plumbridge fair?]
I though [thought?] I would write a few
lines – as I am abel [able?] to do nothing
Bell. [Bella?] I supose [suppose?] told
you last week that I had to give up work
with pains in my leg and hip joints I
was very Bad and confined to my Bed for
a week - I am up to day [today?] and
writting [writing?] you this letter just
to let you know that I am getting Better
I have not been out yet But I think I will
be all wright [alright?] in a fue [few?] Days
Thomy [Tommy?] and old Gilky [Gilkinson?]
Was [sic] in Omagh yesterday and got the
money £39 2s 6d not so very Bad after all
- if we had new [known?] in time we might
haven [have had?] it all any Body [anybody?]
that went before the Grand Jury got all
there [their?] money in full as it was
the last time for them to sit-

[Page 2]
Tom Bought 3 sheep in Gortin fair
William and him is [sic] in the
Plum [Plumbridge?] to Day [today?]
to see if the [they?] get any [sic]
- we are done ploughing and has [have?]
a Kill [kiln?] of limestone at home - the
weather is splendid and likely the [there?]
will be some sowing next week the other
sheep is [sic] up this long time I think
its 33 the [they?] had up to date
we have kept Jamys [Jamey’s?] part for cutting
it looks pretty good - we are going to sow
one Bag of flax seed in youngs home [holm?].
and the remender [remainder?] in corn
Well stilling [distilling?] has went [gone?]
to its hight [height?]
Bob Warnock and Jamy [Jamey?] Ballantine
has [sic] run one here and there this long
time they had made up with they [the?] police
in Both Baraks [barracks?] - so They thought
the [they?] were [sic] no danger - at any time
On Saturday they [there?] come [sic] Both parties
and surved [surveyed?] all the 16 acres where
it was went round it in all Directions and
left - they had agreed with them to put
in two stone of sugar in the potch [poteen?] and

[Page 3]
and lave [leave?] them the old Still – this was not
all Johny [Johnny?] Warnock went Down to the plum
[Plumbridge?] and stoped [stopped?] till the Sargent
[Sergeant?] come out and then then [sic] told him that
all would be right for them next day told him where it
was and how they were forit [for it?] - Sargent
[Sergeant?] Bid Johny go home and he would keep the
men in - fortunately [fortunately?] the [there?] were
only 3 men in each Barack [barrack?] - just at 3 oclock
on Sunday morning they had all taken they were nearly
done [singling?] when the police shouted to them that
they were all prisners [prisoners?] the [there?] were
5 men in the house to [two?] of the police caught 4
the other police was [sic] a fue [few?] yards
Behind they tumbled the police and they only held
two of them Bob Warnock and James (Ann) McNamee
James McNamee. Jamy [Jamey?] Ballantine and William
Ballantine got off - for the present - they
handcuffed them togather [together?] sent for
W [William?] our horse and cart and just at 9 oclock
they comming [came?] down past our house with

[Page 4]
all. - on a Sunday morning and
on till [to?] Gortin and found Bail till [to?]
the Binch [Bench?] they say they have give
in two of the others - Jamy [Jamey?] Ballantine is
off for Scotland I hear [[heard?] a few moments ago
So the [there?] were [sic] no fun in this
nights work - they will not Kiss and tell
again they have just got what they
wrought [worked?] for and plenty are not
very sorrow [sorry?] - James Ann was going
to have a ploughing and he wanted some for
it - none of they [the?] others new [knew?]
the plot with the police or they would not
[sic] been there - it will learn the young
fellows a lesson in future But I think
this will end it - something els [else?]
would [sic] filled some of them as well
The [There?] are great times now in regard
to this Bill - I will send you th [the?]
paper with all the names who is going to
stand as local men around here the [they?]
will be up to everything thats game -

[Page 5]
Dear James - I supose [suppose?]
its hard for you to know what till [to?]
do after July we all hope you will
come out well no matter what course
you will take afterwards - But we could
not advise you as you know the old and
new conterys [countries?] - and almost
everything now its money go where a man
will to get started at anything after
that money is comming [coming?] in as
fast as it was laid out if men could
mak [make?] money without first leaving
it out then every one would be at it
and it would come to [too?] easy

[Page 6]
how is your Money lasting
Sometimes we forget how long its
away - then you might be short
awhile but we [work?] pretty well
-and we had to Borrow not one-
penny for either you or ourselves as
yet we neither get stuck [stock?] nor
interest from James as yet But I think
he must do something before long your
note will be 4 years again June - don't
let the money be out before you tell us -
this is not very well wrote [written?]
and I am nearly tired sitting up - But
you need not be uneasy about me as I
think I have the worst of it over. I
am up cince [since?] 9 oclock and now
its 3 oclock. So Good By [Goodbye?]
J. J. [John James?] Smyth
