Letter 1
Castledamph April
14th 99

My Dear James
Just when I am not doing much I
thought I would give you a few more lines -
we received your letter to Day [today?] we are happy
to Know that you still enjoy good helth [health?]
for when it is gon [gone?] all is gon [gone?] -
The weather now is very wet and work is nearly at
a standstill we got the field at the Bridge
sowed on Monday last to Dinner time none
sowed no place till that morning - what time
the people will get it in its hard to say
this afternoon is improving our boys is
trying to harrow for potatoes we will
have them in the Black land and [Shaws?] field
we will be able to Drill from the Midday
Down to the road straight - So that is a
change But the ground is very wet and no
appearance of Dry weather as yet - but we
have two good horses and very quiet in all
harness - not any trouble with them they
are in good order
well I may tell you that
I have not been out since I took those
pains till Monday tom had to commence to
Sow and I went Down to see him how he would
do. Your Uncle William come [came?] out and they got
on two sheets and they Both sown the field
and we had it finished when the rain Come [came?]
on I have Been Down around it to Day [today?] just before
writting [writing?] But I had to sit Down often till I
got up again its 6 weeks tomorrow and I
have never took off my pants and two pair of
Drawers day or night - linen and two shirts
one of them flanal [flannel?] and lost plenty of
sleep - I do not go to Bed now from I get up
till we all go what time I will be abel [able?]
to do any work I dont know but when I am able
to be up and walk some little I think I am
all right and so I am if the weather was got
warm I think I would be all right [alright?] -
William Ballantine - Each of these was fined in 6 pounds
James Ballantine a smart lesson
Bob Warnock
James McNamee [K?] James McNamee has escaped as yet
no word about him - our Tom went in my place - about the
sheep - Elkin fined him in 4s and 2d of cost - But
its a long lane But the [there?] will be a
turn in [Demal?] [Henery?] is one in [fads?] house,
the Elkins ones and the [Mc?] [K?] [Dawes?] is
split the one would not Swear lies for each
other now that the finish of ontrufleness [untruthfulness?]
The number of sheep now is 63 and one died
would be 64 - we have 6 lambs now and about 8
more to lamb - then intend to buy some more
yet thank god all the money we have sent you
and all we have lost at law we have none to
Barrow [borrow?] as yet nor I think will not though
it takes a good lot to do us - at present
But we will have to keep from law if we
can for the future -
I have often said I would write
to Woodslee people But I never got
at yet let them know that we are all
well and again Summer the [they?] all intend if
well to get there [their?] picture taken and Send
it to them - By the time I am writting [writing?] you
aught [ought?] to have a letter with 2 pounds its
Small this time but it will do till you
get more - Keep yourself in good order
that is for cloathing [clothing?] anything you Stand in
need of you will have to get it So you need
not be afraid we will tray [try?] and Do our
part as well as we can - William and Tom
never complains of either hard work or
sending you plenty of money as for that life
policy I would have nothing to do with it -
as 25 years is a long time and perhaps be
like W J Duncan here get it Elis [Eliza?] is going
to finish this letter. So good By [goodbye?] for the
present.

John J Smyth
