Dear People
Just a few lines
tonight as it is late. Belle
& I have just come in from
Church this is the first night
of revival meetings so thats
what have [sic] kept us so late
meetings every night next week.
First I was up to Essex
Friday night and Saturday
went to the Library Social
Friday night it was not as
good as the other.
Well today I went with Uncle
& Aunt to Church and we brought

[Page 2]
Miss Jenner the teacher up with
us for dinner we had a few
others for dinner als [also?] a lady
Missionary from the North West
was with Fred & Cass. and Mr
and Mrs Jones that is the ones I
told you of before he is not very
well yet. he is queer looking.
Miss Jenner & I came up with
Jones's people on the slay [sleigh?].
So we had dinner and after that
some music by Miss Jenner.
So at 3 oclock her & I went
to Sunday School, and after Sunday
School Jones's young people had the
slay [sleigh?] there and a full load
of us went up and left Miss Jenner
at home. So [we?] came back
here one [on?] the slay [sleigh?],
and Mr & Mrs Jones went home with the
rest of them.
So Belle and I went to
Church at night and we got

[Page 3]
a sleigh ride up with Jones's
half way, As I was tell [telling?]
Jones's little fellow that he
was driving all day.
This is the first sleigh ride
that I have got that is to
call one.
Some snow here now.
Some good wreaths too, not
very nice walking in some
places. I'm just thinking
how Ill go to school tomorrow.
Well I'm getting along very well
at school in some things History
will bother me a little and
Physiology subjects that I never
had before. These last mornings
are very cold to go out so early
and the wind seems just to cut
the face off me I wear a veile [veil?]
but it does not help much and
they say this is the wind that
makes the peoples of this
contry [country?]

[Page 4]
so yellow So you need not be
surprised if I go back like
a molatto [mulatto?].
I have not received any money
from you people. I am going a
little in debt: if you dont hurry
up. Jim would give me some but
I think he would rather not so
I would rather not ask him I don't
think he would give me as much
as what he got from home or even
half as much but in other ways he can
spend any amount.
He told me the last time he was
down that if I would go up Friday
that he would get me a Pair of
skates and Pair [sic] shoes to skate in
but it was when Belle told him
to do it So I went up Friday
and he never mentioned either
skates or shoes. So I'll never
ask him about it, again, when
he is down here its O, I'll get
you so and so when you go up
to Essex but I go up and gets
nothing. Its just a blow for the
time being. I would like to get
out to learn to skate but I don't see
that I can by all appearance
[appearances?]

[Page 5]
Tuesday night getting dark
Just rec. [received?] a letter from
Liza today I see you are all enjoying
Yourselves and has [sic] snow and frost
I would [sic] liked to have been there
to give some of them a snowball
no snowballing about here at all.
I see most of the visitors
are back again the same as ever
I suppose: Miss Moore told
me a long time ago that
Miss Devine was married to
some other one this was not
the one that the talk was about
before. Isnt Paddy Ned married
I suppose the house is bare
now when Bella has all her
belongings out of it. I wonder
is there a track of me there
atall [at all?]. now.
Whenever I get a letter it
brings all to my mind I
always say to myself is
it true about Bella being down

[Page 6]
there I can't get it into my
mind atall [at all?].
Jim got a letter from
Lizzie McCullagh some time
agoa [ago?]. he thinks there is no
one can write a letter like her
I think she must have ate [eaten?]
the dictionary some time. She
said in it that Tillie did
not like where she was. She did
not stay long enough to know
whether she would like it or not
I had a letter from Miss
Ashfield Sixmilecross I see
she is visiting Mrs Nelson
must be kept busy now. Has
Miss Campbell took much
more trade from her.
They [The?] Women's Missionary
Meeting is to be here tomorrow
Miss Jenner is coming with me
to it. Nothing like this over there.
I have joined the Temperance Union

[Page 7]
They were always at me to join
so I thought I would and
not give them the opinion
that we were drinkers over
there. A little white bow
is the sign. but I have
lost mine already.
I wish you would send
the Tyrone Almanac if you
could get it.
Aunt and Belle is not
pleased about Jim not asking
Belle up to Essex along with
me. Belle says she has done
as much for him as any sister
could do and he never asked
her to go a place yet. You
know he hardly owns [sic] them
when they go up to Essex
he thinks they are not well
enough dressed for him to be
speaking to.
I am just in a hot nest
between both I must side
with them and I must side

[Page 8]
with him a little too,
and then he sends down his
socks and drawers to get
washed so I will have to tell
him to not send them anymore
for I have not time to wash
them now when I'm going to school
When he comes down here he
is never done talking about style
and they think it is them that
he means.
How is John C. [Charles?]
getting along has he got a
raise yet.
I am getting along, well
at the Music but I'm
thinking you will need to lay
by some [time?] to buy a piano
for me when I go back.
When I'll run out of money
I suppose I'll have to quit
it takes a little but not much
if I had what was spent at
the law it would keep me going
all the time I would be out here
I'll be glad to see that money
coming. but I suppose you could
not send it any sooner.
Good Bye Mary Smyth
