| Transcript | [No envelope] [Page 1] J. W. Brien G.W. Rogers Drs Brien & Rogers Physicians and Surgeons Essex, Ontario Dec 20/10 Dear old Jim Accept our sincere congratulations on your splendid appointment you would no doubt be surprised when you got my letter to learn that I knew nothing of it at the time of writing: but even Carstairs who was doing all he could for you & who was in company with two of the cabinet ministers at some Convention outside of Toronto a few evenings before the appointment was made knew nothing of it & hence knew nothing of it when he was here with me. The appointment was [quietly?] mad [made?] & sir James Whitney (your friend) was the man who did it, Now Jim you have an excellent appointment & just the very thing you are particularly qualified for if you had your own choosing of a position [Page 2] you couldnt choose one better to your liking, therefore I would advise you to take warning from the past & drop all expression of feeling against any member of the government which [has?] appointed you & which is standing behind you & supporting you. You cannot tell what this may lead to, perhaps very much higher positions in Gt Britain under the [Clut?] or [Dow?] government or perhaps in Canada under the same. Stick close to your work in other words deliver the goods and show the government & the world at large that you are the right man in the right place. Remember I am not intending for Dr Anderson or [Mrs?] Hanna or in fact anyone I know that Anderson deserves criticism for his actions toward you but dont you write to anyone calling him [down?] or questioning in any way the motives of the government in giving you your present appointment not that I care about them but I know how these things will react against you & you have had lesson enough.
