Mrs J. J. Smyth
[Back of envelope]
Maidstone P.S, May 30th 02
Rec [received?] a letter from
Eliza Tuesday night I had not got one for
I suppose three weeks and I did not know
what was the matter, but I see by her letter
that father was sick I suppose that was the
Well we got the great celebration over. I
went up to Windsor Saturday morning and
stopped till Tuesday evg [evening?]. Jim
went up Friday and stopped till Sat. night
but he went back again Mond [Monday?] morning
as [there?] was no school. Well it was very
good we saw the highlanders then in their
uniform and their bare knees. I don't
know how many of them was there but there
was a great many anyway The bagpipes and
brass bands were there any amount of red
coats. They were only practising on Saturday
for Monday. On Monday the [they?] marched
through the city and then went away to a park
where they had automobile races and all kinds.
We did not go out as Jim said it would not be
any use. But we were sorry we did not go
afterwards. Belle had come up that morning
(Monday) and we went across the river after
the parade. I got a pair of shoes at $3 1/2
Jim was awful cranky said that I was
the worst dressed in Windsor but it is his
own imagination and he would say just what
he thought before everybody. I was going to
get a muslin dress for the summer
but when he said so much I thought I would
get a good one. So I got a black skirt $1
per yd. I am getting it made in Windsor. I
will get the jacket before the winter I got
that blouse made that I got in Omagh for the
celebration but I dont like the way its made
it dont [sic] fit me very well.
Well our examination is coming very close
now we have only about a month now Jim says
he'll laugh if I dont pass but I dont care
he thinks there is no one as smart as him.
Everybody knows the sort of him here.
Sunday night, June 1st just come home from
church. It is very warm today Annie & Charlie
came out today they were here at 10, oclock.
& Cass was also here as usual. The boys
did not come out as the buggy has got too
small for them all.
I had a letter from John C. [Charles?] Friday
I should have written to him long ago but failed
to do it. In holidays I will have time to write
Belle & I had a fifteen mile ride yesterday
afternoon. We first went to Essex and then
went to a place called [Cottam?] where they
are getting the rag carpet woven. It was
a very nice ride but I think more of a
long ride over there all the same.
I think that its because you allways [always?]
see something different for here the country
is all alike only the houses may be different
Well I got word today that I have to go to
Windsor tomorrow or Tuesday to get my skirt
fitted Willie [Visior?] comes out here to buy
eggs and butter so I think I will go back with
him and then come home in the train.
It is his Aunt that is making it. I dont like
to miss a day from school now and it is so near
the exam but I suppose I will have to.
I see John C. [Charles?] has joined the Good
Templars well its not so bad. When I think of
the excursion on the 12th it makes me homesick I
would like to be there for it.
I suppose Liza & Wm [William?] &
Tommy will be going. What about Bella. I
suppose she don’t get out any more now.
Thats not the way here they just go out
married as well as single and I don't
see why they should'nt either.
Well I hope the orangemen don't come to
Plumbridge this year, I would rather that
they would wait till [sic] I be there.
Well I don't expect to see any celebration
this year. It is away about fifty miles from
here so I'm not going to go. It will
be a big day about the Plum if they come
there. This is the first twelfth I have
missed this long time.
I suppose you have all the crops in now.
They [the?] people here are just planting
their corn if you would just see the way the
[they?] plant it I could not begin to describe
(The sweat is just dropping off me writing)
Well I suppose Father has got over his cold
again I was thinking that there was something
the matter when I did not get a letter sooner
I had a great [big?] job yesterday forenoon. I
washed 10 pairs socks & Stockings Jims & my own
and a blouse and ironed two blouses that one I
got last year for the twelfth and
this one that I got made. My back was almost
broken when I got done.
Belle has not commenced house cleaning yet I
think they are going to get a girl to help.
John & Joe are both in Toronto now. They are
great [chums?] the one cant stay without the
I weigh 164 lbs I am loosing [losing?] again
(I guess) its with the heat and the exercise at
school playing baseball I weighed 174 I think
before I started to school and 155 when I came
out here, But they tell me I dont look so [big?]
I dont know
Good Bye for this time write soon
[Written upside down on page 1]
If I don’t write soon you know whats the matter
That I’ve got to [too?] much to do [Y?] [B--?]
