Dear People All
I don't think I need make
amy [any?] excuses for my delay in writing this time
I was always for writing but I never did. Well
I might have written sooner but I am wrote you
a long letter last week so I thought that you
would know that we were alive anyway.
Since I last wrote I have been down to Woodslee
they are all well they would not want me to go home
for a while yet they think that I would hardly
pay for my trip. If you would see what apples
they have about 30 bbls [lbs?] [barrels?] I guess. I
get my fill of them now, They were talking if the [they?]
could send a barrel often there but it would cost more
than they are worth. I think that it is them that are
making me so big I eat so many of them.
Thursday week [there?] was a grand concert here
in town. Oh! if you could just witness it it was
grand. Words can't express it all. The next night
Friday Jim I went to Woodslee there was one
there for the Temperance cause it was pretty good
Jim gave a few words on Temperance as you will
see his name in the paper. I am sending you a paper
especially too [to?] see my marks in French. I take
French with the II Form so I did not do bad. Did I
Two of [sic]

[page 2]
those who took the highest marks have been taking French
for two years so I don't give them much credit. We had
an examination last week on Writing & Algebra & this week
we will have one on History. I will send you the result.
We are preparing very hard for our High School Commencement.
They are getting up a very good programme. Drills, plays,
music &c I have to sing in the chorus & perhaps I will be
in the drill I got a new white waste [waist?] just now for
it As all who are in the drill has to be dressed in with
waists & black skirts, it is a military drill. The Commencement
is on 19th Dec. Our Lyceum programmes are still very good you
will see an account of last weeks in the paper where I have
marked.
Well I don't know where I will spend Xmas yet I suppose
in Leamington or Woodslee I don't know which yet, I would
rather go to Leamington as Woodslee is a lonely place. Well
Jim has got an extension on his certificate so he can teach
for three more years if he want too [to?] I was beginning to
think what I would do if he had'nt because I could not have
stopped here & to have left at that time they would think we
were pretty hard up.
Well how are you getting along with your new farm I suppose
you all will have enough to do

[page 3]
anyway. How will you do with what cows you keep on it Drive
them up & down always or what I suppose you wanted a good deal
of the amount to pay for it. Where did you get the balance?
How is Bella getting along? Those photos are a long time
coming. That one of Wms [William’s] is pretty good only he
looks a little to [too?] cross looking, I’m not afraid to tell
the faults.
I would like to get one of Willie John now why does'nt he write
and tell me about the ducks geese etc.
I had a letter from Bella Campbell Saturday. She did not say
much but she was telling me about those meetings and she says
that young people don't try to do as much good as they should.
She seems to have some admirer down by Derry but she did not
want me to tell it so don't. She got it all mixed up & I could
not understand it very well.

[page 4]
I suppose it won't be very long now to the snow will visit us. I
long to see it, I always like to see the snow and especially here
where we enjoy it.
I must hurry up & get at my studying as I have it all to do yet.
I am just about kept busy at one thing and another I am getting
along fine at my music I would like if you would get a piano
for me when I go back. If you would I might stay at home.
I enclose a pattern of my waist It is very nice. A little
piece would let you see & how it looks

Good Bye
Mary Smyth

Write soon & give me all news
I wrote to John some time ago

[written up the side of page 4]
Tommy Hay never answered my letter I wish he would send me a few
feathers. What did you do with what he sent you & what are they like.
