Well I suppose you will be a [faded?] when I'll tell you of Uncle William's [sic] Gilkison's [Gilkinson’s?] death. Died on Tuesday night 27th – February at eight o'clock He was not a week sick altogether It was very sudden Every one was surprised to hear of it & a lot did not believe it, they thought it was a mistake that it was Old Joe. They sent a telegram to Joe & John. John came on Wednesday night & Joe came yesterday morning at ten o'clock Funeral yesterday at one o'clock They were very vexed, it was so sudden they had no thought of him dying I heard them say last night he was many a time worse & got better. William is away leaving Joe & John at Newtown [Newtownstewart?] to-day. They did not get long to stop, Willie Smyth up here is very bad not expected to survive They [the?] Doctor was with him three or four times. but I think all is no use. The Doctor says if he passes tomorrow saturday that he might get better, There is a terrible lot of people complaining around here and a great many died this while. Sally Kerney’s daughter Rosey married to James McSwiggan died this morning giving birth to a child They were living in that new house that was built above [Micky?] Davie’s' I think I have told you a lot of sorrowful news so I must say something else. If there is nothing wrong with you I suppose you are getting on well [Page 3] with your school. I hope you are not cross with the children you must remember when you were a schoolboy yourself for I heard them say you would put pins in Mosey Warnock & such like, Well just when I mention his name he has not been out of the house since August was a year I suppose you remember the time whatever he had he has not the power of one of his legs can travel none except with two chairs Well I forgot to tell you that Joe Duncan [Aughlane?], James' son is also very bad he was very ill last night Williams' ones' and all was sent for He was in Newtown [Newtownstewart?] on Monday So its in a short time that there is a change Willie the Minister & John A from Strabane is there Uncle [Charles?] was sick but is nearly better again I think this is all at present And Remains Your Loving Sister Mary Smyth |
