My dear Sir,
I have been expecting
a letter from you some time-I hope you will
write immediately on the receipt of this
enclosing the power of attorney for you to sign
and send back immediately. As you well observe
the power is rested firmly [in?] - D.B.
Jnr [Junior?] and Mr Lemle the lawyer
who is to take charge - He is considered the
cleverest man in the city - in close touch
with [Mr ?] B. and will in their account
and no other, do the best that can be done - He
is to have a decisive interview with Morgan
Turley and that man Richardson. To-day I will
let you know the result when I hear. Beckwith
seemed to fear the cut throat contract of 50%
between Morgan Gurley and Richardson, but I
think Mr Lemle has somewhat [carried?] them
and they will relinquish that claim, it will
of course have a claim for money expended
in paying taxes & expenditures actually incurred
and something for their great trouble during
two years, but I am confident Lemle who is
a Jew will put in the screw & get as good
a bargain as possible. Mr Beckwith was afraid
Richardson would make a legal fight for the
contract and he told me he thought, if he
did, it would go hard with you. Albert Sr
[Senior?] has taken much interest in the
matter and it is in his advice that Lemle
has taken charge. [Admittedly?] he does not
enter in to business, having turned over the
management and everything to young Albert, who
is now President of this bank-I think everything
will be done to remedy [straighten?] out
and improve matters under the present
management. Do sign this paper immediately as
it is important for future action.
Mr Lemle is going to send to [Batin Rouge?]
to see all about the lands - he is not trusting
to the [gangs?] [word?] and I have seen John Smith
once at a [Ball?] since writing to you last -
He is making money and seems to be profitting
every way by having got into your [books?]
However I think the mantle Elijah sits
somewhat uncomfortable on him, he looks shrunk
under its large proportions - I would not be
astonished if he went into consumption or
something - Arthe is still having a social [boom?]
- Artemise is devoted to her and her Uncle Albert
most kind - We have had summer & hot summer
weather since our arrival most of the time.
Today however the change has come & it is
cold - icicles hanging from the curtains &
ice in whatever contained water; but the
sun is shining gloriously & but for the
[keen?] wind the day would be ideal.
Jack Ward has [grown?] [old?] he asked
affectionately after you - I saw Gerry Lewis
at [Beckwith's?] one day & he was inquiring
very particularly - all your old friends
ask after you - I hear William has been
with you - I did not write & send him my
address - in case he turned generous or
prosperous - I suppose he got it from you
& of the earthquake coming
I'll hear - You would not know N.O [New Orleans?].
It has improved so - There are skyscrapers here
as well as [North?] - electric cars all over
the city - they say the finest systems in the
U.S. - St. Charles [Ave?] is built up wonderful
and beautifully & all the land in [Carrollton?]
that should have been ours if [Ward [Gurley?]
had had any [se---?] is [improving?]
rapidly - I am sending you a tourist guide to N.O.
[New Orleans?] - that will show you some
of the improvements - particularly in the locality
where the lands we still own,
are situated - Florida [Ase?] is adjacent to
the lands - it has been thoroughly drained
& it is merely a question of time when the
latter will be also-[Onosato?] the Real
Estate man told [septima?] it should be [worth?]
at the [------?]
God grant things will turn out well but for
God's sake don't impede them by not acting or
doing immediately - what is necessary.
It seems strange but I miss Ireland. I hope
you are keeping well, and if things [admit?] we
shall be coming back like the swallows.
Yours truly
Nato
