My dear Mr Littlejohn

You told me when I saw you in Nov. in New York
on my arrival from Ireland to write to you when
the Bill to refund my husband Dr. A.W. Smyth the
money paid by him through his bond to the Government,
when he had been held responsible as Supt'
[Superintendent?] of the Mint at New Orleans at
the time a fire recurred in the Cashiers' Vault
in said Mint, would be presented. Therefore I am
doing [&?] [now?] The Bill was presented by gen
Estopinal Jan 9th and it has been referred to the
Committee on Claims. I hope to see you soon in
Washington as I trust I shall be able to leave
here next week. Your kindness to me in New York
I deeply appreciated, and your [powerful?] help
and interest would mean so much to me in the
battle that I hope you will find the time to
give me all the aid you can. It is said
"Bread cast on the waters returns after
many days" I pray that God, who watches over
the weak and helpless, will reward you in
the verification of the old Biblical promise-
Believe me

Yours gratefully and sincerely
Nathalie Bouligny Smyth.
