TranscriptDear Mr Dowell
I am sincerely sorry to
hear that your old enemy had paid you
so early a visit, as will on Porters
account as your own. - Your servant
did not succeed in getting the Pistols -
It appears from what Captain Vance said to
Anthony, that they are at Major [?]rans
I wish the Captain had informed me whither
they could certainly be be procured if sent for.
Although I much doubt if Pistols will be
and I should like Porters to practice them
There is no fortelling what harm the
affair will take and he ought to
be prepared at every point. The review
of Toomer, in which I am [dispere?] to
access, is, to bring Wilson to a shortcut
& back short at the distance of about
twenty or thirty yards - while the danger of
Porter will be nearly the same whether the
fight is in this, or the usual method
that of Wilson will be greatly increased -
At all hints, there can be not doubt, but
that Porter might if [?] to draw the
challenge & thus obtain the [?] of turns -
Porters known to Wilsons last abusive and
unprovoked attack has been forwarded to
Charleston & most have appeared before
this - though firm, it is cool & temperate &
[?] the other so ricidiously in the wrong
that it cannot fail to provoke him
erasingly - If it draws out another
volley of [?], Porters harm will be to
when they fire. - I am inclined to
expect that the business although at this
stage of it or some other will end in a
personal assault, if so Wilson
must be shot - Know such circumstances
to Porter would be as [?] in putting him
to death as in shooting down a wild
beast - I wish you were here to appoint
me with your [?] - Do not when
at your own life by coming, when it may
be imprudent to venture, but whenever
you are convalescent, it will be of
service to you to come & spend a few days
or weeks would be better with me
here in the bracing and of the oceans
Take care of yourself
Your friend very sincerely
Pat Taylor July 1820.
