| Transcript | Philadelphia november [the?] 6th 1872 Dear sister i now rite [write?] you lines to let you know that i am in [a few?] pretty good health at present and i hope when you receive this letter it will find you and the family all enjoying the same blessing i received margarets letter in due time after date and i was glad to see that you were all well but i was to see that our neabour [neighbour?] james simpson son was no more it appears that he lived but a short time after loosing [losing?] tagishill Dear sister i would have wrote to you sooner but i expected to take the first letter you would receive in my pocket with me but i have some reasons for not paying you a visit before now the discount is getting higher on our paper mony [money?] and besides that one of our saving funds burst the time of the war [and?] i had 250 dollars in it we have it now in the supreme court And we have had two trials on it the Judges has all the depositors books before them and after all the [they?] have never gave their desioon [decision?] in favour of the depositors i belive [believe?] the Judges to be as great raskals [rascals?] as the diretors [directors?] that robed [robbed?] the instution [institution?] a great many thinks the Judges is bribed some of my acquaintance that had money in it is still in hopes but i have very little hopes of it but i intend to take a trip over to see yous all before long i intend to spend the rear of my days either in urney or scarvagherin our friend robert clark had a very severe Attack of the smalpox [smallpox?] this spring he was all covered over from the crown of his head to the sole of his feet his tung [tongue?] was even swold in his head when he took the disease Ann sent for me to assist her in taking care of him i sit up with him every night from he took it untill [until?] he recovered it give ann a chance to get her sleep At night the docter [doctor?] requested he was to be kept very warm i had a stove at the [?] [?] that i kept warm all night i at-ded [attended?] to him with midison [medicine?] and hot drinks throu [through?] the #PAGE 2 night according to the docters [doctor's?] directions there was a Mrs hunter lived next door to them and she was very kind to ann she went to the pothcares [apothecary?] for midison [medicine?] and to the stores for every thing [everything?] she wanted had it not been for Mrs hunter and me it is hard to tell what might have been the consequence i left there some mornings to go home to get a sleep and i was afraid when i would return in the evening that he would be a dead man all the acquaints [acquaintances?] he had never came in to [into?] the house more than if it was on fire during his ilnes [illness?] he got over it and What was best of all [Mr?] smith there owns the brewery where he works sent him his pay every saturday night the same as if he had been at work that was 15 dollars per week I have heard nothing from nancy [?] for these last 12 months the last i heard from her she was living out in the neaborhood [neighbourhood?] with John in lancaster County Mrs caldwels [Caldwell's?] dauters [daughters?] has put a beautyful [beautiful?] headstone to their mothers grave i heard some time ago that the reverand [reverend?] Mr clarks health was somewhat impaired when you write let me know if it be so I have nothing more to mention at present but still remains your affectionate brother Matthew brooks |
