My dear Mr Allen
I am much obliged
for your kind thoughfulness
in sending me the Papers
concerning our good friend
Mr. Porter we must have been
talking about him just about
the time he died and I said
I would much like to see him
once again he died full of
age and honour after living a
good life not all for himself
I hope when our time of departure
comes we may be as ready to go
I think I should find great
changes in Belfast, I did
intend to come this year but
Annie & May are to be married
on the 13th September in the
evening at the Cathedral of
course they are very busy and
I left them to it and have been
here except a few days since
May - I am always going to
give over working but a new
place has so much to be done
and I hate to see outside
the house entirely - The air is
lovely just like Scotland -
Last week I took Kitty and
Mr Ambrose and went to
Milwaukee by Grand Haven
we had the official car and the trip
was pleasant. I think Milwaukee
a beautiful place the houses
are so large and the grounds
so beautifully kept. In June
Annie, May, Kitty & I went with our
President Colonel Grey, his son
and Mr Marshall a director
went through the Thousand
Isles to Montreal thence by train
to Quebec we had no end of fun
I had been before but that only
made me enjoy it more I had
more time to look at particular
things - I like all our large towns
& cities & I don't think any of
us would like to live in England
again for good - Mary is coming
out in the Sythia on the 7th Aug
& fortunately Mr Henderson of
the M S & L Ry [Midland Scottish
& London Railway ?] is coming too
so she will have company else
I am afraid at the last she
would have repented leaving
her little ones - Mary will live in
Hamilton. I am glad to say (sic)
our Annie in Halifax & that
is far away for even this country
where long journeys are not
much thought of. Mr Broughton
is very well and looks quite
young again he tells me he has
invited Mr G. K. Smith to the
weddings - If you were thinking
of coming over we should be
delighted to see you and you
would find great improvements
I never hear from Mrs Ringland
but my old housemaid who
is Ann Graham from Killyleagh
had letters sometimes
from her people & I keep up
pretty well with news of my
old friends. I still like Belfast
better than any other place, here
next - our house will feel very
quiet with only three girls, our
youngest son is to go again
to school for a year, at present
he is camping out near
Pine Lake with Mr Drayton
formerly of Drayton Manor
England, he is a fine tall boy not
as lively as my Willie but a
good boy, [Wynerch?] is married
& has a little daughter ten
months old - I believe Mary's
children are all very pretty
and clever - You can imagine
how I am looking forward
to seeing her after 5 years
absence - Annie, May & Lizzie
have all been home -
Remember me most kindly
to friends and with me united
kind regards believe me
yours sincerely
Fanny Broughton
