Dear Cousin
I received your ever
welcome letter yesterday & glad
to find that you were well hoping
that this will find you enjoying
the same blessing as it leaves
me at present. I think you
will be pretty lonely now since
your Sister has left I think
if she comes out west you had
better come with her I would
feel a good deal more at
home if yous [you?] were out here
I would have some place
to go on vacation we are
going to have a great time
on the 4th of July the fire
department is going to turn
out we are getting nice
uniforms made we have had
a pretty fair share of fires
since I wrote to you before
we had 9 fires inside of the
last 8 days making two runs
last Sunday most of them
was at night never before
in Fresnos history has the
same thing occurred we have
to sleep in our pants now
since they have been coming
so quick Dear cousin I must
say that you are the most
determined girl I ever had
coresponded [correspondence?]
with. But we have corresponded
now for over 3 years & been
acquainted for about 8 or 9
& still you have the assurance
to say that you are pledged
to another now this thing
of pledging I dont believe
in it for a couple might get
acquainted & pledge themselves
to each other whoom [whom?] God
himself hath not ordained to be joined
together. now I have been
out here going on 4 years &
working like a turk with the
intentions of starting a
comfortatable [comfortable?] home in
the near future. I discarded
some of my old school mates
simply on your account &
as you being an orphan
I thought it was my duty
to either quit correspondense
[correspondence?] with you at
once or discard the others but
since I received your two last
letters I have determined to
respect you as a Sister &
nothing more except your mind
changes but if I were to meet
you I think we could rekindle
old affections when you write
please let me know if your
Sister has come to Stockton
or not I think if she would
come out here you would
not stop much longer in
michigan for I am sure the
wages would far exceed michigan
I feel a little sleepy owing to
having so much work at night
lately but we expect to have
a little rest pretty soon or
the town will be all burned
down so I must conclude
by sending my best regards
I remain Your Sincere Friend
please write & Late Lover
soon W. J. Weir
