My dear Uncle
I cannot tell you
how glad I was to get your
dear kind note - I was too ill
to read it myself when it came
but I got my sister Louisa to
read it to me & then I put it
under my pillow so that I
could look at it very often
& as soon as I could I read it
myself - I don't think dear uncle
you ever could have written
a letter before that gave so much
pleasure & then the book came
with my dear aunts own name
in it in her own beautiful writing
so like my dear mothers -
I have not read much of my
book yet as I have had a great
deal of sewing to do since I have
been able to sit up -
The country looks so lovely now
everything so green & so many trees
& shrubs in flower -
Just as I got so far my hand
grow so tired & it was nearly dark
so I had to put my letter by till
this morning - it is not tidy looking
but if I wait now to rewrite it
I shall be too late for the mail
I wish Geraldine would write to
me I would so much like to hear
from herself of her children, &
I know I must not hope to hear
very often from you dear uncle
as I am sure you have many
others to write to - but I would
like to write to you sometimes
& I shall write to Geraldine too
but not this time - I hope
she is quite strong again & the
two dear little children quite
well - how precious our children
are when we have been very ill
I don't think I ever loved mine so
much & never felt their love so
precious to me as now - Oh dear
uncle no one has so much to
be thankful for as I have - so many
kind friends & my husband I do
wish you knew him I can't say
any thing better of him than
that my mother had the greatest
affection for him, he was like a son
to her -
I had a letter yesterday from
my brother John in Illinois
they are getting on so well - they
have a lovely farm it is there [their?] own
now he paid the last on it this
spring, he says he has the finest
horses in that part of the states -
he was offered $200 for one of them
& he sold 7 little pigs only 5 weeks old
& got $70 for them, if George is
interested in farming still he may
like to hear this - John has 25 acres
of Indian corn planted, it is a
beautiful crop - I never saw it in
perfection till last summer, I
went down to Kentucky to visit
my brother in law & his family &
in going through the state of
Ohio, there were such immense
fields of corn, just as far as I could
see, nothing but corn -
We have not heard from
my brother Charles for some time
the last time we heard from
Charlotte he was very poorly, I
think a trip to his native country
would do him good - it would
be a serious move for him to
come to Canada with his large
family so I suppose he wont come,
Please dear uncle give my love
to all my cousins & a large share
for yourself from your
affect [affectionate?] neice [niece?]
