TranscriptMr John Campbell New York 12 July '88

Dr [Dear?] Sir
I have your Esteemed favors [8?]
[Febr?] & 8th May the [foremen?] shoud [should?]
have answerd [answered?] before this tho [though?] I did not
[receive?] it to the 11 Feby but was in hopes to
[have?] seen You soon myself but from what the gentleman
with you has wrote Mr Sadler I fear it wont
[be?] soon as I expected. I am much obligd to him
for his candor [candour?] on this occasion there has
been a fair state of the affairs of the books
at his inspection [was?] since his [arrangements?]
here, therefore being an honest Man
I have not [a doubt?] best he represents them
as they realy [really?] are. They have recd [received?]
[a large?] [sum] more than the [Partners?]
here which ought to be applyd [applied?] to the
[Debts?] of the House. Not withs [withstanding?]
that my Sister [will?] [show?] you a proposal I
deliverd Mr Sadler the 16, Jany [January?] last
which no people who were [desirous?] of an imediate
[immediate? [sole?] [Settlement?] [could?] object to,
but there is no instructions [come?] [out?] inconsequence
thereof & you [must?] think this hard considering the
[anxiety?] of my Sister for my Return. No doubt Mr Sadler
writes you fully by this oppy [opportunity?] therefore
unnecessary for me to say anything further on the
subject. I think you are right with regard to the Bank
it will enable you to wind up your [Cousins?]
affairs to advantage & you have not [a?] [friend?]
wishes you greater success than [I do?].
I thank you for your [kind?] intentions to go
to the Highlands with me, but [I dont?] [understand?]
Celtic Moreover the Women maybe as warm
in their disposition as the [Men?] & with the
Representation you have had of mine
it woud [would?] not do. perhaps I may not with
some honest thing that will take me for
better or worse or the same reasons Will
Harrison took Matty [Tedford?], for tho [though?] I have
a large [parcel?] of Stockings they are in
very bad order. [I?] [flatter?] myself from
your [dismissing?] your [Wig?] that some
Clever Girl will lay hold of you for
if you live as long as Robin Armstrong
youl [you will?] certainly want a [Mother?] Abigal
[Abigail?]. Wishing you long Health & Happiness I am
[&c?] [and?] Susan. < &c
