Mr William McCullough

Dear William
Having promised through Matildas
letter I would write you soon, I sit down to do so and would
have done so 'ere now, but waited hoping to hear from
you or some of the family - I had reason to think Jane
would have written to either Matilda or myself long ago.
Matilda has never had a letter from her yet and it gives
her great uneasiness thinking that she perhaps had given
cause for this silence but if this is the case let me assure
Jane that it was altogether unconsciously and very far from
design. Since Matilda left home I presume that Jane having
so much to attend to, her time is so much occupied as to
prevent her finding time to write to any one - I trust however
that she will sometimes make an effort to write to her only
sister.
I received yesterday from Hugh a letter and paper, for
which I feel very thankful and hope for a continuance of
such favors [favours ?] - I defer answering his letter
by this mail, as I had promised to write to you, and
have now deferred it too long - I will feel as much pleased
if you will not consider it too much trouble to write
to me at least every 2nd or 3rd month and if Hugh, Jane,
and your father would also write every 2nd or 3rd month,
we would then have a letter from home at least once a month
and did you know how much pleasure they would afford us,
I am sure neither of you would think a trouble of writing
- I would also be glad if you could send me a newspaper as
often as you may have an opportunity - I will also send papers
to you as often as I can - although it is seldom I can get
one in this part of the country that is worth sending - The
alarming state of things in Ireland at the present time
adds an additional interest to Irish papers, and the one I
got yesterday is the only one I have seen for many months
I hear from John every week, and as I generally go to
Philadelphia every 2 months I have an opportunity of seeing
him - he is at present in good health, and in a pretty good
situation, having sold out the business in which he was engaged
-
Shortly after the arrival in Philada [Philadelphia ?] of
Captains Williams and Mason, some persons called at No 154
South 5th Street with a parcel or Bundle addressed to John
McCullough - 154 South 6th Street being the address of Mr
Simpson where Johns letters are generally sent the person
who had the parcel was directed (by the family who know John)
where to take it - but he did not take it there and has not been
heard of since - when you write will you please state whether
any parcel was sent to John by any person coming from your
part of the country, and if so, who that person was -
Matilda is well and sends her kind love to you all - she
wishes me to ask whether you got the Lease of the farm
from James McCullough Sen [Senior ?] before his death or since -
I will endeavour to send some papers to you by this
[mail ?] - if not by this I will by the next -
Hoping to hear from you soon and often
I remain
very truely Yours &c
John P Lindsay

Matilda wishes to be kindly remembered to all her old
friends - and regrets very much that the papers sent by
Mrs Campbell of Plumb Bridge [Plumbridge ?]have never come
to hand - the cause perhaps was a mistake in the address
my address is - Port Clinton Sohnykill County-
Penna [Pennsylvania ?]

Please inform us how James is and where he is, Matilda
and I both wrote to him - but have never heard from him -
I got a paper some 4 months since which I then [___?]
from him, but [___?] letter
