My Dr [Dear?] Parents

I recd [received?] my Fathers letter which he
sent by Liverpool only this morning and
am extremely well pleased with its contents
I recd [received?] the letter you sent by Mr Searight
on I believe the 23rd Sept last he has set
up some kind of Store (I dont know exactly what kind) at a place called
Bloody run near Bedford Va. [Virginia?] Old Mrs Quins
Death was a thing to be looked for I am
afraid I will not be gratified wit [with?] seeing
the few lines you mentioned Mr Hopkins was
to get put in the New Orleans paper as we
do not recieve [receive?] any from that City. in your
next after receiving this I would be glad you
would mention his direction If you can
find it from any of his friends I am
glad to hear your visitors was pleased with
your place I hope you will soon be able
to raise the front of the house as Lord
D. wishes as you are pleased when I write
often you may depend I will embrace
every opportunity but you must also do
the same every vessel coming from Belfast or Newry
to the States it is so long coming to hand
by L.Pool [Liverpool?] however when there is no opportunity
by the other, use that as for provisions, Ive
had plenty, and to spare. My mother is too
kind in promising to send me the Shirts;
I hope yet to have it in my power to thk [thank?]
her in person for her kindness to me I
see you have been particular this letter not even
forgetting [forgeting?] to mention my birds, but apropos of birds
I have now 14 or 15 beautiful Canaries in my
room, & which I have the care of belonging
to Mr Peters, this you may be sure is no
toil to me.
I recd [received?] about a fortnight ago a letter you wrote
in Belfast; If I had not recd [received?] this one I was
going to complain of your writing such very
laconic letters, but there was an excuse in Belfast.
I recieved [received?] a letter from G [George?] Mahood about a fortnight
ago from Baltimore, he was well and
had not been any ways ill effected [ill-affected?] with the
Plague that was in that City last Season.
We have had a great many fires in this
Country this season, some of them very destructive
particulary Savannah#, in Georgia, & Wilmington#, in
North Carolina, both of which Cities were nearly
entirely destroyed by this destructive Element -
we have had also little touches of it ourselves
here, this winter there has been five or 6 fires,
one destroyed about 20 houses and if wind had
not fell would have been more destructive -
in all there was I suppose about $30.000 worth
of property lost. this afternoon no less th[torn]
was a house burnt down and it was [torn]
fortunate there was a very great rain this [morning?],
& a large hole near the house was filled
only this was so convenient, a whole side of a
street would have been in great danger [torn]
Street here you will see the remains of [torn]
that has been burnt not yet rebuilt; to [torn]
stranger it appears very dismal.

Business is at present at a low ebb Failures every
day The hardware is the best business I believe
here of any in the commercial line we contrive
midling [middling?] well to hold up our prices selling
very little without having 40 or 50 pcent [per cent?] profit
Give my best respects to my G.father [Grandfather?] in Tandragee
My G.mother [Grandmother?] Mr & Mrs Sloan Mr & Mrs Lavery my
mother and all the children & Prudence & Mary
I believe I will write to John I remain
Dr [Dear?] Father your affectionate Son
Robert Love

# these two places there is reckoned 10 or 12 millions [faded] property lost

Remember me kindly to all neighbours & [companions?]
and all enquiring friends

[addressed to:]
