Augusta Geo [Georgia?] 1st Jul 1867

My Dear Wm. [William?] John
I enclose you Manders & Wrights
First of Exchange on Robert Lockhart & Dempster of
Liverpool for Two Hundred and Eighty eight pounds
thirteen shillings sterling payable on demand which
you will oblige me by collecting and holding subject
to further orders. the second of Exchange I shall forward
by next steamer. I have yet a small lot of Cotton unsold
in the hands of L & P which I have instructed them to
sell forthwith. and so soon as I receive the Sales shall
draw on them in your favour for the amount. I wish you
would give me your opinion with regard to investing it on
your side of the water. I could do much better with it here.
but in the present unsettled state of the government of this
country I have no confidence in it. and no improvement
can be looked for so long as it is governed by the fanatical
Radical party now in power. Business is at, and has been
at a completer stand for the last two months. and never during
a long residence here have I seen money so scarce. previous to
the war we had some Banks representing a capital of six or seven
Million. at present our National Bank Capital Four Hundred
Thousand Dollars. I shall write you more fully in my next.
the last account I had from Mr Campbell he and Mrs C. were in
good health. your friends in this City are all well. but
complain greatly of hard times. and I fear we have not seen
the worst.
Very Truly Yours
Harper C. Bryson.
