| Transcript | ansd [answered?] 3.8.67 [3 August 1867?] Augusta Geo [Georgia?] 20 July 1867 My Dear Wm. John I had this pleasure on the 16th last enclosing First of Exchange on Robt. Lockhart & Dempster of Liverpool. on demand for Two Hundred and Eighty eight pounds thirteen shillings sterling. Enclose you now second of same time and date. I have been quite disappointed at not receiving Sales of my Cotton in Liverpool I directed them sold some time ago. but up to the present time have only been advised of a small portion of the lot being disposed of. I look for the Sales daily. I had about One Hundred Bales yet to go forward. which I hope to get off this month. and as I do not wish to bring any of the proceeds to this country I would be glad. you would be on the look out for some safe investment. as I before stated to you that under our present rulers. I do not consider there is any security for property . at least in this portion of the so called Republic. I will not attempt a description of the Government under which we are living. as you doubtless are well well (sic) informed. suffice it to say that it is the worst of all. a military Despot is in. and is destined to continue so for many years to come. our City continues remarkably healthy. and the Crops of Cotton and corn never looked better. what a blessing it is to be an impoverished and suffering people. had the crops failed this year. our sufferings would have been greater than that of Ireland in 1847.
