| Transcript | Augusta 23 August 1867 My Dear Wm. [William?] John Yours of the 3rd Inst. is received. and have again to trouble you with the Frist of Exchange payable in London on Robert Lockhart & Dempster of Liverpool at sight for Four Hundred and four pounds seventeen shillings and five pence Sterling. which you will be kind enough to collect and place to my credit. the second I shall forward in a few days. it will not do to invest capital at the rate of interest they allow in your town. there can be but little demand for money. when the rate is so low. why here I have loaned out small amounts at 2«% per month which were promptly paid. the National Bank. the only one we have with a Capital of half a million of Dollars charges 1« [%?] per month and declares a dividend of Ten per ct [percent?] per annum. at least it has done since it was established some two or three years ago. I have a small lot of Cotton in the hands of Brown Shipley & Co which I have instructed them to sell. so soon as I receive Sale shall draw for proceeds in your favour. and it being the last lot I shall shop this season. shall then advise you how I wish the amount in your hands disposed of. We had an unusually wet summer. quite too much so for the Cotton crop. planters complain that they have suffered considerably in consequence. the cotton will be very late coming to market my letter will be received at this point before the first of Octr [October?] I had a letter from our friend Mr Campbell. he and Mrs C. are enjoying themselves in Habersham County. your friends in this place are in good health. the City generally was remained healthy so far Very Truly Your Cousin Harper C.
