John Your favours up to 28 Sept have been duly received. and would now advise you that I have this day drawn on you at sight payable in London in favour of Branch Sons & Co. of this place for Six hundred and forty three pounds Sterling which you will please honor [honour?] I am collecting all my funds which I intend to invest in Cotton should it reach a point which I would consider perfectly safe. say from 12« to 14 c [cents?] United States [----?] included. and from the signs of the times I expect to do so in a very few months. to day I sold good Middlings at 16 c [cents?] and look for it to go down to 15 in the course of a few days. we have no Capital here. and planters are compelled to send their Cotton to market and sell at such prices as they can obtain. to say the least the people of the South are in a deplorable condition and regret that I did not leave it at the termination of the late war. our mutual friends and families, John Bones and Robert Campbell have returned and all look in good health, I wish I could spend a summer in Europe. it might help to lengthen out my days. but it is very doubtful if I shall ever be able to do so. your Bank Statement I handed to Mr. C.
