le 23th [August] 1874.
My dear Mama,
I returned yesterday night from Lourdes, and was too tired to
write to you as I was thirty hours in 'the train'. The Pilgrimage was very large, there being upwards of 1500 pilgrims from Paris, besides
2000 from Nimes whom we met at Lourdes. Lourdes is very prettily
situated among a range of hills which run from the Pyrenees and
nearly entirely consists of religious bookshops, lodging houses and
hotels. I found it very hard to get a bed, but at last managed to get
half another fellow's. I drank the water, and took a bath, and feel
something better, but as there were only 8 persons cured out of the
whole 3000, I could not expect to be one of the number, as they were
models of Piety and holiness. I bleed a great deal from the nose
now and then but not much for the last few days; I think it has done
my head good. Everything is astir here in 'Paris' same as every
other day, theatres, shops etc. all open.
I have some Photographs of Lourdes which will give you an idea
of what it is; I gave ten shillings to the Cure of Lourdes to say one
Mass for Papa and another for myself. You will be surprised to hear
none of the Priests or People at Lourdes speak English, and even
can't hear [a] Foreigner's confession without special permission, but I
managed to get confession. I hope you are all well and with fond

Your affectionate son,
Patrick Glynn.
PS I leave tomorrow night or Tuesday morning.
