| Transcript | 13 September 1897 My dear Mother We are again in the thick of the Federal Convention work, the Second, or Sydney sitting being now on. It is to consider the amendments suggested by the various Australian Parliaments to the Bill drafted by the First, the Adelaide Convention. I accomplished rather a record last week. On Tuesday, during the Sitting, I wrote a proposal of marriage to a girl whom I had only spoken to once; had a telegram accepting on Wednesday; made what the audience considered a Great Speech on Thursday at 5.30 p.m.; took the 7.15 p.m. Express to Melbourne same night, got married on Saturday & returned same day, arriving here on Sunday. You will think I am mad. Perhaps a little, but it may have saved me from a reckless step. She is at all Events what will please you; a Catholic, a good one, with enough religion for the two of us. She has been round Europe several times, & spoke French to the Pope for half an hour. I believe she is well off, but I'm hanged if I know and didn't care. I hope I won't pull her down from Heaven.
