Allen Esq No 8 Wellington Place Augusta 26th December 1840 Belfast, Ireland Dear Sir, At the request of our friend Mr Robert [Walter?] of this place, who has the management of the property of the late Andrew Mitchell and is in correspondence respecting it with Mr. George Mitchell of [Stindroy?] Head Ireland, I write this letter as an introduction of the latter to you, as one who can give Mr G.M. [George Mitchell?] satisfactory information respecting the present [disrupted?] state of Stocks and Real Property in this city arising from a variety of causes which we generally hope here will not affect us long, such as last [years?] epidemic, the [succeeding?] inundation, and the failure of the last Cotton crop; which in this state of S. Carolina will not be half what it was the previous season - There are other causes arising out of the situation of our money affairs tending to increase present embarassments, but whither they will soon be remedied it is hard to say. From sales which have recently taken place I concur fully in the opinion entertained by Mr Walter that the present would be an unfavourable period for puting [putting?] either real property or stocks into market here I shall be much obliged by your imparting to Mr. Mitchell such information as he may desire and as [general?] knowledge of our City may enable you to give Very respectfully & truly yours A.
