| Transcript | 1852: January 3 To Mary [], Ireland Auburn — 3rd Jan'y 1852 Peterboro, Canada West My dearly loved Mary A new year has begun & it makes me feel grateful to our Heavenly Father & preserves for all the Mercies & blessings we enjoy from day to day, month to month & year to year.... I shall be rejoiced to have a letter from dear Mrs. Black & shall indeed prize it for it is many years since I have had that enjoyment before & all my old friends are as dear to me as ever & their kind love to me as fresh & warm in my heart as if I had only left them 4 or 5 years ago instead of nearly 30. What a large portion of life has passed since we parted & what changes have taken place. I am always pleased to hear of your sister Emily going to see my sister who is so fond of her but who so seldom has the pleasure of seeing any friends. I wish you & she could be more together & also that you were better acquainted with the Rothwells whose father I know you have sometimes seen on his visits to Mr. Thomson. I think since I wrote last to you Maria Frood & James Reid were married. They live with the old people who are very fond of Maria & she seems as happy as possible & I am sure must be a great comfort to them. Both Maria & Robert Reid are wonderfully well but we see very little of them as none of us go out very often. I have been confined almost entirely to the house this winter & during three months of the summer I staid with Bessie Brown.... Bessie Brown has had rather a severe trial in losing another Baby but she is one who tries to see the hand of the Lord in everything & to throw herself more on His unfailing Mercy & loving kindness & to know more of Spiritual things & seek for comfort from them in all her trials & afflictions. I think you would love these dear children of mine if you knew them. Anna Hay too & Ellen I have reason to hope all are inclined to turn their hopes & views Heavenward. My son Wm. was married last July about a fortnight after Maria Frood. Louisa my new daughter is a sweet tempered amiable young creature & one who I am sure will be a good wife. She is very young, only 18, & has been always much indulged & admired from her infancy & yet really has not been spoilt by it. But of course she has much to learn & I hope her heart may in time be changed as well as my dear William. All my dear boys are constantly the subject of many prayers. My poor Frank is still far away in Pennsylvania struggling to make some money but having met with many disappointments & some illnesses which have kept him back. I have been expecting him home some time. My other sons are all trying to push themselves on in life & I hope are free from vice & all well disposed & amiable & great comforts to me. George is still in Toronto learning Engineering. He is most like his dear father in face & Frank in some points of character & manner. He is light hearted & gay & a favorite with all who know him. I have had a severe attack lately, which required care & I felt the affection & kindness of my dear children… |
