| Transcript | 1867: February 13 To Annie Atwood and Kate Traill, Gores Landing, Ontario Douro 13th Feb'y 1867 My dearest Annie & Kate I cannot send a letter to Mrs. Bird without squeezing in a few lines to thank you my dear Annie for your kind letter which I had the pleasure of reading!... I am now enjoying the great happiness of having your dear Mamma with me for some time & I never saw her looking so well & so handsome. She is in very good spirits too considering the sad trial she has so recently gone through, but she & dear Mrs. Strickland can feel great comfort in thinking of the happiness & "Rest" from all pain & trouble the dear object of their tender care & watching is now enjoying. Your Mamma says dear Mrs. S. is of course very low & likes being alone in her sorrow but comes to join the family at meals. The Roberts S.'s have moved to the Homestead, but I suppose you know this as your Mother says she wrote to you lately & therefore will not put in any contribution to my packet except her love & she is very much better than she was when she wrote. She desires me to tell you to be sure & lose no time in having dear little Clinton vaccinated as the Smallpox is spreading rapidly though the country. Some man who returned from the Shanty brought the infection to this neighbourhood & he & two of his children have died of it within a few miles of us in Douro. Your Mamma is very anxious that little Clinton should be vaccinated without delay. Your dear Mamma is busy writing just beside me. I am so glad to have her here & to have a comfortable quiet room for her to sit in as well as to sleep in & I trust she may keep as well as she was & not become weary of our monotonous life here. Our lives & society here altogether are so different from Lakefield. Kate Brown is very well but very thin, always our bright sunbeam. Our weather has been very changeable, sometimes extremely cold & the snow drifting in every direction, at other times so mild that it is like spring. Today is thawing rapidly after a night of rain which makes every place look dirty & wet in holes but the snow [is] deep enough yet for good sleighing only too soft at present. It is not wholesome weather. Mr. Percy is better & was out airing one day but not quite so well after it. Joss Collins not much better either, Tom Hay very poorly indeed, & almost every family with some illness in the house. I have very little news that can interest you. Indeed my pens & ink are both very unfit for nice writing & I am very sleepy tho' it is not dinner time quite yet but I was not in bed till near 2 this morning and up at 6 so I can hardly keep awake, but am as ever your sincerely loving old Mamma Stewart. Love to Mrs. Atwood & accept the same from Bessie & me. I hope all the colds are well now.... |
