To Frances Brown (Fan), [Peterborough, Ontario]

Monday 3d May 1869

My dear Fan, I am glad you took into your head to write to me. It is such
a long time since you gave me that pleasure before. I feel very stupid and
sleepy these dull dark days for I cannot take my turns on the Veranda or
keep the door open as I do on nice warm days. Thank you for that hymn.
It is very pretty. Do you know the meaning of Terrestrial and Celestial.
Of course you do though you have not got any Globes, for you know the
Globe representing our world or Earth is called the Terrestrial Globe
and some Globes are made to show the Stars and they are called the
Celestial Globes but they are very seldom used except in large schools
where astronomy is taught....
I am sorry to say I often have pains in my back too but not like yours,
for mine are from old age.
Have you any nice Sunday Book to read on Sundays. You should
tell me sometimes what books you are reading and how you like them
& what you think of them & what you like best in them. I have got two
new books lately by post from Miss Wilson. One is travels in Italy & the
other is a life of a Mr. Edgar, a gentleman that poor dear Aunt Matilda knew very well and she would have enjoyed reading it. But they are both
in heaven now and very likely are together....
Now Aunt Bee has come to sit here so I must shut up my shop & say
good bye. Ever your own loving Grandma — FS
