To Frances Stewart (Bun), Peterborough, Ontario

July 14th 1871

My dearest Bun

I am afraid you will think I have forgotten your Birthday but indeed I
have not. I have been thinking of you very often & wishing I could have
you here with me to give you a good [coax] & kiss but all our pleasant
times seem gone by. I see no chance of seeing you unless Mamma can
come & bring you with her. I don't believe I shall ever see Peterboro
again. It seems like it but I can't help that & so dear I must write all my
birthday wishes & send all the love I can in a letter which can never carry
all I have to send. But I am sorry I have not got any present to send. I
could not get into town or get any one to go so I could not get things I
wanted & besides I have not got any money yet so I feel rather cross upon
it. Still my dear Bun I wish you a great many happy years & returns of
your Birthday. I wonder if Mary gives holidays. The other schools I find
give 5 weeks which is too long I think.
The day after tomorrow the 18th will be poor Fanny Stewarts
Birthday. She is far away out of our reach but I am sure she will think of
us all & we will think of her. Tell Mama I wrote last week to Aunt Annie
& gave her message. And now dear Bun go round & kiss Ma & Betty &
the boys all for Grandma & get them all to kiss you in return for your
own fondly loving Grandma,
F. Stewart
