To Anna Maria Stewart (Birdie), "at Mrs. Hays,"
[Peterborough, Ontario]

Wednesday
17th Jan'y 1872

My dear Birdie

You were a very good girl for writing to me. I liked your letter very much
and I am very glad you have promised to write to me every Friday. I hope
you will do so. I hope Anna's cold is better. I think she is very wise not to go out these cold days till her cold is gone.
I think Bud was a foolish fellow to drive so carelessly as to break the
Harness. I wish Watch would stay up here as we have no dog at all. Watch
comes here for a day or two and then he goes away for a week or more.
We have no dog and I often wish for one. I like to hear dogs barking & it
seems so dull not to hear a dog sometimes.
Oh do you know I was fast asleep.
Dear Birdie, do you know I am very apt to go to sleep when I am
writing or reading and I am always vexed at being so lazy. And so my letter
has been neglected but I can't help it. My eye was sore but it is nearly
well today and now it is so near dinnertime that I must put all my papers
and pens and ink away as I am rather more inclined to eat than to write
just at present but I hope you will write to me soon again. I have not had a letter from Illinois for a long time. I think Fannie Hay had one from
Mama. And now dear Goodbye.
Believe me your very fond
Grandma, F. Stewart
