Allen Esq Ulster Bank Belfast Ireland Augusta May 23 1863 My Dear Sir I wrote you last on the 4th inst. acknowledg [acknowledging?] yours of the 23d Nov advising of the Geo [Georgia?] R Road [Railroad?] having made a Dividend of Eight Dollars per share on its Stock and repeating what I had written in previous letters, which were expected to run the Blockade, and therefore there was no certainty of their reaching you. I have now to advise you that at the appointed time in this month the Bank of Augusta declared a Dividend of Six Dollars per Share - which I have received as Attorney on the following Stocks viz On Wm. Jno C Allen's 120 Shares ea [each?] $6 = $720 James Campbel's 100 Shares [each?] $6 = 600 Wm.Campbell's 42 Shares [each?] $6 = 252 ----- $ 1.572 The Dividend for these persons by Geo [Georgia?] R. Road [Railroad?] as advised 376 $1.948 In investing these funds I have purchased and stored in the Cotton Ware House of Harper C. Bryson 12 Bales of Upland Cotton now marked A&C 69/481 70/475 71/490 72/524 73/477 74/433 75/395 76/427 77/470 78/488 79/466/ & 80/464 at 36 cents per lb. = $2012.40 The insurance that I effected on the 68 Bales previously purchased, expired about the middle of this month, and I have had them extended to the middle of November at the same values, although the market is much advanced, as the price I have just paid will shew you. I have concluded not to insure any more, because if a fire occurred in any of our warehouses a recovery of loss would be very doubtful. I advise you therefore to have these Twelve Bales insured with you, and any additional value which you may think proper on the others. And to enable you to do so I give you on next page the particulars of Insurance now existing here - On Policy No 4812 of the Augusta Insurance & Banking Company Insured to 15 November next 1863 $1825.00 on 42 Bales Cotton 18968.00 & on Policy No 17 of the Southern Insurance Company Savannah W. E. Evans, a clerk in the Auga [Augusta?] Ins [Insurance?] & Bg [Banking?] Co. the Agent here, I have insured an additional value on the same Cotton of $1.400 On Policy No 2621 of the Southern Mutual Insurance Company of Athens Georgia Chas. Hall of this place Agent, I have insured the other 26 Bales of Cotton 13929.00 for $2570.00 to the 16th November next. I have now to acknowledge the pleasure of receiving on the 16th inst your favour of the 3d of last month. On that day I wrote to the Acting Br [British?] Consul at Savah [Savannah?] A. Fullerton handing him a particular account of the marks numbers weights and costs of the 68 Bales of Cotton, that he might be able to protect as far as possible of these his fellow subjects, who were natives and residents of Ireland. On the 21st I sent him the following certificates "State of Georgia City of Augusta I Robert Campbell having for several years acted here as Attorney for William John Campbell Allen and James Campbell and William Campbell, who are natives and residents of Ireland and subjects of her Majesty Queen Victoria, in receiving and remitting to them the dividends upon Bank and other Stocks held by them here - Do hereby Certify that since the present War between the United States and Confederate States the difficulties of remitting Dividends have been so great, that as such Atty [Attorney?] I have invested at various times Dividends on their account in Sixty eight Bales of Upland Cotton weighing 32877 pounds. (a mistake of 20 pounds in taking a 9 for a 7) That the same is now stored in the Cotton Warehouse of Harper C. Bryson in this City - And I further Certify that I have furnished A Fullerton Esq Her Br [Brittanic?] M [Majesty's?] Acting Consul at Savannah with a particular list of the marks numbers and weights of said sixty eight Bales of Cotton - Given under my hand this 21 day of May 1863 R.
