| Transcript | 10 May 1756 To Isaac & Zachary Hope, Rotterdam Gentlemen: I am favoured with yours of the 13th & 15 December & 10th January & observe the contents. Your Letter Via London did not come to hand till the 20th past, & that by Captain Wilkenson the 1st Instant, which deprived me of the pleasure of writing you before. Captain Wilkenson discharged his Cargoe in Stanford, about Sixty Miles from this place, where his Goods ware all safe stored. But A Number of other Vessels arriving shortly after him from your parts and Copenhagen made so much noise that our Governor is resolved to stop the trade here, if possible. Since, A large Value of goods that came by way of Copenhagen is seized, & indeed that trade is now on such a footing all over the Continent that there is no managing it with Safety, so that I would [advise] you to venture no goods to these parts but what are first Entered in England,as the risk is much greater then any profit that may arise from them can make amends for. I have sent a Sloop to Stanford to take in your goods, & what more I had by Wilkenson, to cary them to A place where I expect they will be safe. As soon as it is prudent, I shall have them brought here. They would sell well now, except the Paper, could I get them Safe here. Depend no time shall be lossed & that your Interest shall be cansulted in the Sale. I can by no means promise such remittances for Palantines as you mention. If you please to send me any of your favours in that way, I shall do my utmost for your Interest & I dare say none here can do more. I shall at all times advance any sum to load your Vessels back that I have A Prospect of being in cash for in Four Months & I shant charge you any Interest. I am fully of opinion that young Palantines will sell very fast & for Cash this season. My reason for thinking so is all English indentedServants has had full liberty for some time past to enter into his Majeslys Regiments, who are mostly recruted by them, & Servants must be had to replace them. I believe my opinion is different from many, yet I dare say it will be found to be right. I shall do Captain Wilkenson all the service in my power & am convinced he is the Man you take him to be. He is not yet come to Town with his Vessel, but I believe will in A few days. Mr. Thomas Greg of Belfast & I Entered into Partnership in the trade I cary on here the 1st Instant. The firm of our House you have annexed. Under our care your present affairs are, and we hope for frequent opportunities to convince you none can have your Interest more at heart then us.
