TranscriptTo William Haliday & Hugh McQuoid, Liverpool, 20 June 1756

Gentlemen:
I have the pleasure of A Letter from Mr. William Haliday of the 31st
March with the sundry proofs of your affairs in dispute with Messrs.
Aspenwall & Doughty, I have had them examined with our Lawyer, &
he now assures me that he has sufficient proofs & that [he] wont lose A
Moment of time. He expects he wont be able to bring on the Tryal before
the courts in October, As the Weather is very Warm in July when our first
courts are & the judges seldom or ever will try A Case. He further
tells me that he is perswaded Messrs. Aspenwall & Co. will be glad to
leave the accounts to arbitration but wants to spin out time as long as they can. This I assure you is also my opinion.
Agreeable to your Mr. WH desire, I again proposed An Arbitration
to them in as Genteel A Letter as I could write on the Subject. But tho I
have sent for an answer, they think proper to defer It, My reason for writing
them was least3 they should deny in Court I offered Arbitration, which
I am sure will have A great weight both with the Court & Jury if it
should come to Tryal. Rest assured that all in my power shall be done for
your Interest, & that you shall often hear from me. WC

[P.S.] Send a Copy of all the Invoices of goods of yours in Aspenwall &
Co. hands that I may Examin the Sales.
