| Transcript | To Thomas Greg, Belfast 13 July 1756 Dear Sir: Annexed you have Copy of my last by the Greg, Captain Hathorn. I am favoured with yours of ihe 1st, 10th, & 26 Aprill and observe the Contents. I have Creditted you in our Company Books £11.7.0 for Charges of Insurances on the goods from Glasgow. I expect them every day, being long arrived at Boston. I refer you to my Joint Letter to the Owners of the Gregs Cargoe for the Cause of her going farther. I am heartly sorry on your Account that I was Obliged to Send her, but as it has been, it Always shall be my Greatest Pleasure to look to the General! good of my friends without any private View. I am of Oppinion she must goe to a great Markett. My limitation of frieght I hope will Please, & that Messrs. Walker & Woodbridge will pay a due regard to my Orders. She sailed this Morning. You must have sent Captain Hathorn dearer then Common from home, for he has made his Expencas run very high here, & Indeed it was out [of] my power to hinder him, or I must have stopt the Vessell. He is too much of a Merchant or a Pedlar to ever make any thing for you. You may depend upon it this is the Case. I would advice if your Vessell goes home safe to look for some man that has less business to do when he is abroad. I shall keep him very much Under if he comes here to load flaxseed & would now have made him go off at a much less Expence but that I thought it for the Interest of the Concerned to keep in with him, which I shant do when he comes in if he dis not mind his Vessell more than his own Trade. I have done all in my power for Captain Nealsons safety on his arrival! in New England. If I gett his Cargoe safe, it will be a grand affair. The Acts of Partnership will do When you make the following Alterations in them: 1st, our Stock in Trade to be £2,000 Currency, Each of which £1500 must be put in the 1st six Months & the remainder in six Months after; 2nd, that no Person shall upon any Occasion during the time of Partnership look into our Books but yourself & Any two of the following men you may choose, Paul Richard, Joseph Haynes,- John Watts/ & Oliver Delancey, Esquires, who are Men of good Character. In Case of any of the two dying you Mention during the time, then you may Choose who you will put in in his Room. I wont pretend to Settle our Books but Once a Year when you shall have a Coppy of the stock account, Proffitt & Loss Account, & Commission Account the 1st of Every May. You are to Expect no other account from me but this till the Books are sent or Carried with me, if I live so long, when [you] are to have the perusing of them as long as you may have Occasion. I will never agree That any sum is Drawn out of the Partnership during the Duration of it if our trade requires the Stock. I dont propose to stay longer here then the Expiration of the time, so you must Leave out the part that relates to a further partnership. Its Unreasonable I should be bound in all things & you in None. So (here is one thing which you must bind yourself to, that as often as the company bussiness requires it, that at your proper expence, you go to any part of Ireland, Great Brittain, Holland, or Hamburg. This I hope wont be often, but its proper it should be Mentioned, as you see I do the Bussiness here without any Expence to the Company. I am of your Oppinion, in case we should both live, but this precaution I look upon to be chiefly taken to a Void mistakes incase of Death to either of us. I return you my hearty thanks for the Tongues & Portor. I will very soon remitt you £500 Sterling. I have Already paid above £1,000 preparing a Cargoe for the Prince of Wales. So have the Acts of Partnership made out a Greeable to this & send them to me, & I shall sign them, as you must do before you send them. I am Certain you never looked them Over or you never woud have sent them in the manner they are. Trade will be very brisk here soon. Pray Dont neglect the Butter. If you can spare Money, send more then the 400 firkins I mentioned before. I shall send you some from this of the Company Money in September if I per Capt.
