| Transcript | To: Vera Foster Esq [Esquire?] From: Edinburgh Feb [February?] 25. 1854 Sir On looking over the enclosed, it appears to me to be very useful detail of Particulars requiring little to be added. I would suggest you advising people not to go by way of New Orleans and Mississippi: the preferable route is by the railways from New York to the western country. Better still to land at Boston, and then take the cars westward. You are aware there is now a railway from Portland to Montreal, and the line will be opened to Quebec in July. Already Western Canada is opened up by a railway from Niagara (connecting with a new York line) to Hamilton and [--?] [--?] by London to Detriot. This is in operation Another line, from Buffalo to [--------?] on Lake Huron is opened as far as Brantford. these lines carry emigrants to the very heart of the country where they can advantageously settle. You should strongly counsel emigrants against buying land at first. Recommend all to wait a while, and take employment at wages, so as not only to save money but learn the usages of the country.
