My dear Jim,
On Saturday last your nice gift reached me, and I must say it was
most acceptable.1 You are still the same kind thoughtful fellow that
I knew some time ago. Ellen was almost was as pleased as if she
herself got it. You know she is my dearest friend, and I will not be
wrong in saying that she loves me more than anyone else outside
Mother, and there is nothing that pleases her more than to see
me happy.
We often sit in our room and talk of you, and since your picture
has taken a prominent place on my table, we never miss a day that
we don't talk of you. Of course I come in for my share of teasing,
but it takes no effect as I can stand quite a little bit of it. Ellen has a
soft spot for you and expressed a great desire of seeing you when
I read your letter to her. As you say, we are not so very far apart,
and you know there is one here who would give anything to see
you, so let us hope that one day you will condescend to visit our Smoky City. Of course I shall leave that for you to decide. You
know best.
I promise you to wait patiently for your picture, but I hate to see
you bothering so much trying to suit such a fastidious creature.
From all appearances today, we will have a green Xmas. It is not
too bad. We are planning very hard here trying to get to early Mass
on Xmas morning as it is quite hard to get away from the children.
We both sleep with them.
Our lady is treating us to tickets for the Theatre to see 'Ben
Hur'2 the night after Christmas, (I wish you were with us; how
different it would be.)
Now Jim, I must finish as we are very busy preparing for 'Santa Claus'
So with loving and best wishes
for all I remain
Annie
