Wednesday night
10? September

My dear Jim,
We will leave here on Tuesday next (16th), and it is a fixed date at
last, but with that there are no bright prospects of a nice 'welcome
home' as we are to go into a strange house, not our own dear little
one where we had many a happy hour, but a large gloomy one away
from Bayard Street. Mr. Mellon thought the family too large to be
cramped in a small house like the one we all loved so well so that
this new one will suit him till his own mansion be complete. Ellen
and I felt all upset today about the whole thing, for our cook will be
with us no longer than while we are here. Still, we must try and
adapt ourselves to circumstances, for we are happy as long as we
remain together no matter who comes or goes.
We go from here to Philadelphia where we remain all day. Then
we go on to the country where we expect to spend a week only and
hope to be in Pittsburgh about the 27th September. My, but that
sounds good! Just imagine what a long summer since 2nd June.
Still, we didn't seem to notice the length so much as it was such
pleasant weather.
I do hope your letter will reach here before I leave. Anyhow
answer your next to Bayard Street as before, for our mail will be
attended to after we get fixed in our new house, and be getting
ready to pack your trunk, Jim. That's the only event I am looking
forward to, your visit to the Smoky City.
While it is so awfully late, I must say good-night for the last time
in Spring Lake this season. Hoping to hear from you soon. [I]remain with love, Annie
