| Transcript | Second letter from Patrick Hughes Franked at St. John, July 12, 1851 Addressed to Laurence Hughes, Fredericton St. Stephen, July 8th, 1851 Dear Laren: Yours of the 7th inst. came duly today. The last I heard from Mary she left Eastport for Portland, Me. I have not heard from her since. It would give me great pleasure could I hear from her and from the rest of my missing bothers. I have not heard from any of them. It gave me great pleasure to hear that you are getting along truly smart. And I am also happy to see that you are handing the name of Huges on to posterity. You wish me to let you know if am married. Not yet, but in a fair way, for this I must tell you. I have given up liquor and am a strong advocate of the Temperance cause. I have not taken any thing for several years and I am in hopes I will never again. With the help of the Almighty I will not. I can not tell whether I can visit you this winter or not. I am in hope I will. Nothing more at present. May the blessing of God visit you and your family as my prayers do. I remain your affectionate brother (signed) Patk. Huges |
