Our last was Brig’ Swallow via Cork to which we refer this chiefly comes to inclose Willing & Morris’s & Bache & Cuthberts seconds of Exchange for the Sums therein specified, the first of sd. Bills being sent by the Brig’ above mentioned we have not the least Apprehension of their meeting with Dishonor, and if they should wou’d caution thee to take the necessary Steps in obtaining Protests, we have little material to say Only it’s likely the Commerce carried on between Great Britain & her Colonies will be in a great Measure Stopped, if they dont repeal the late unconstitutional Revenue Acts which are very oppressive; we have no other Means left in our Power in a Legal Manner to do ourselves Justice, but to omitt the taking off their Manufactures, we are resolved to be free from their Internal Taxation let the Event be what it may, it’s better to be Cloathed in a homely Garb & be free, than g<o>rgeously apparel’d & Submitt to Slavery, for what better than Slavery is it if the Parliament of Great Britain can take away our Property without our Consent— So much for Politicks
I rece’d this Day a Letter from Brother Sam who was in Charles Town, S. Carolina, the 4th Instant, accompanying my much esteemed Friend Rachael Willson from that (North England) as I wrote thee before respecting his Journey <I> need not add, but that he was well, I dont expect to see him here before 5th Month next, W Johnson from your Parts was Setled in Charles Town & kept a School, he died lately in that Place & was much lamented by his Acquaintance as an ingenious Man; take a Paragraph from my Brother’s Letter “William Johnston is lately deceassed & left a Widow & five small Children, she was bro’ to Bed two Days ago, he is much lamented here being a general Loss to the Place on Acco’ of the Youth he had under his Care, he had a very large School & in a likely way to do well”—So it is, when we have strugled for a Series <of> Years with a fluctuating World & have some Reasons to hope for an Enjoyment of the Harvest of our Labour Iron Fisted Death comes as in a Moment & deprives us of all our Golden Dreames; our Family is well with Tender of dr Love to thee & all our Friends We remain .
Thy affectionate Cousins
Saml & Jno Morton
