[Letter 1]

Essex, Ont

June 26th 97

Dear Father, Mother, Sisters, & Brothers
In answer to your
letter which I received a week
ago to-day I was much pleased to
hear that you people were well and
that you were going to celebrate the
Diamond Jubilee.
There was a good time I believe
in every part of the World. It was
celebrated at Windsor and different
parts of this Country but I did not
go to any of the places.
I notice in the papers here that
the [Dillonites?] [etc?] had a counter
demonstration at Dublin and that
they broke windows and had a
general blow out Several arrests
were made,' I expect to see all
this news in some of your Irish

[Page 2]
I suppose you Unionists had
a an [sic] opposite view of Victoria's
long reign.
I notice in our paper that [Laurier?]
and the canadian soldiers are
attracting considerable attention
over there I also see that Stewart
the Canadian win [sic] the prize in
bayonet contest as [Islington?]
defeating the British regulars.
I suppose preparations for the
coming twelfth are the order of
the day [now?] as this being the Jubilee
I expect that you will have a big
day. I am not thinking much
about it, however I expect to go
to Ridgetown with the rest [whether?]
I do well in my examinations or
not. I am reviewing as much
as possible now and during the
next few days. We will attend
School until wednesday

[Page 3]
although reviewing will be
the principle object. The entrance
Examination and Public School
leaving take place on Monday
& in following days and they will
occupy two rooms in High School
and we will have the remainder
Our Commercial Exam starts
after that and I will have it
over this day week and then the
primary on Monday and finishes
this day fortnight.
We are all a little anxious
concerning the examination
and many of us are afraid that
we will not be successful.
If I fail I don’t know how
I will take it but I will have
to put up with it one way or the
other. I am doing all I can
at reviewing so as to be fresh but
I have so many subjects that it
is almost impossible to review
them all. It may be possible that
I will write about this day week
and let you know the result of
the 4

[Page 4]
Commercial exams. I expect
I will almost be able to tell pretty
close on the number of Marks I made
and so [form?] a pretty close opinion of
my result, I just thought I
would hurry through this letter
and let you know that I am
well and all the others. I am
going down this evening to Woodslee
and will come back again tomorrow
If Tommy Hay comes over
I would like he would send me
one of his pictures (Military Ones)
if he has any. I am sorry
to hear that Uncle Chas [Charles?] is not
feeling well I hope he will get
all right in a short time,
I think this is all I have to say
at present and it only took me a
few minutes to say this so

Good Bye to all

Best wishes to James A Smyth
Band Boys and Orangemen. I expect some
evening they will be playing and I will be
puzzling my brains to think of enough for
an examination paper.
