South Woodslee
July 12th (rather 13th) 03

Dear People:-
Just a few lines tonight to let you
know how I spent today. Well as I wrote to you my
intentions Still they did not come true. Jim came
down at 7 o'clock this morning and asked me if I
wanted to go to the celebration. I had'nt thought
anything about going and soon forgot about it being
the 12th though I was thinking of it yesterday. I
told him I did'nt know whether to go or not so he
thought I had better go and see the Canadian
Celebration. So I did the train left Woodslee
at 11.10 oclock. about 3 o'clock at home. There was
an awful crowd in the train & drumming as usual.
The celebration was about 16 or 18 miles from here
Tilbury is the name of the place about the size of
Newtownstewart. When we got there they marched through
town and then we had dinner and after that we started
to the field or wood as you might call it as there were
quite a lot of trees there. So they had speeches and
playing there for about two hours. I did not hear only
two speakers as my nose started to bleed and I

[Page 2]
had to get away back where no one was in sight
It bled for a long time and I had to borrow two
handkerchiefs to do me. I got back just as they
were finishing the speeches so. I went back up town
and got into a ladies' room and got cleaned up a bit.
and then went to see a baseball game for about half an
hour Then walked through the town a little and
went to the station and got in our train. We had
a fine time coming home in the train.
We are just having an argument here over where
is the best celebrations quite a hat [hot?] one too.
I was [telling?] that the celebration couldn't come up
to the ones at home so they say here that they are just
as good. Belle said I was only displaying my ignorance
by saying that. So you may think that it was a pretty
good one. It is not hard to get Belle mad. While I was
talking I made this over the paper.
Well now I'll proceed it is all over only saying
a few words now and again. There was bugles there and
3 or four brass bands and one bagpipes it was [good?]

[Page 3]
only about 7 or 8 bands altogether. I said all along
it was not half as good as the one at home they don't
look as nice nor they cant march as nice either. Belle
says that it would not be very hard for them to look
as nice and to walk as nice as the fellows she saw
over there. We had quite an argument they made
me mad. I guess they would rather I hadn't gone today
as it was washday but I hadn't anything to wash so
was independent.
Well now I received Liza's letter tonight when I
came home she just sent it in the right time. I got
home here at about 8 o'clock. But no band came up
home with me for something new. I was just thinking
going away this morning that you were having about
the best part of this day over about 3 o'clock there
but now when you would have a dance afterwards why I would'nt
I wish I had been there as I suppose it is all over by
this time near 11 o'clock here. We had a very nice day
not very hot. It rained a little just after we got there
but it soon dried up again.
Well I see by your letter that the baby

[Page 4]
is said to resemble me. I was just thinking it would.
Now you did not tell me what you called it yet. I
suppose Bella don't know much about attending to
a baby. I think I could learn her if I was there as
Cass has learned me. I keep Charlie and he never
says anything Once he cried and I got sick of him
I could'nt do anything to stop him. He is not very
well now just cutting his teeth.
Well now I expect you to give me full
particulars of the 12th and all about it. What was
done and who was there and all. I was in to a
dance (just looking at it only today) There was a
dancing [ball?] there but I only stayed a short
while.
Tuesday afternoon 14th

I will finish this now and get it posted tonight.
There is an ice cream social on the Church lawn tonight
so I must hurry up Jim is going to give some kind of a
speech. Sarah is coming home tonight for her holidays.
Belle just got a letter from her this morning saying
that Lizzie and her husband is not coming.
Glen & Leslie are here for their holidays now so there will be
quite a houseful when they all gather home.
Good Bye [Goodbye?]
M.S. [Mary Smyth?]

[Written upside down at top of Page 1]

Our argument is all settled again I was mad for a good while
after at what Belle said but she tried to make it all up
by asking me about other things. She gets all out of
patience and don't think of what she says
GoodBye M.S. [Mary Smyth?]

[Written along left side?]

I had a nice drive Sunday evg. [evening?] after church

Rec. [Received?] note alright but don't know yet whether
I can get it changed or not. If I go to Business College
as I intend to do after holidays I would like to get the
money for it. If you cannot spare it now I suppose Uncle
would lend it to me. I will pay it back when I get making
some. I think I would like about £18 or £20 I may stay at
Annie's if I go and if she asks me. So that I will save
paying for my board. M.S. [Mary Smyth?]

Write soon and give me all the news.
