| Transcript | [Letter 2] [Page 1] Castledamph Nov 21st 99 Dear Brother Mary wrote some on Sat. but was late for the post so it did not go. She has told you all about the band going to Newtown [Newtownstewart?] They had a very good day. and they are all pleased with the cars I think they will walk no more. it was very nice with the flag in front & the men all wearing sashes. The stone was laid by Mrs Millar Newtownstewart Jerry Dubar & a few others helped There were eleven band's present Mr Morton Mr Moore & another man were the speakers. they talked [Page 2] a good deal about the war. John says that Kruger got some groan's but that wont do him much harm. we will send a paper with full account. as soon as we get it. You are better informed with war news than we are. as we have to do with one paper per week. unless when we buy one in Strabane & sometimes we get James [Houston's?] We learn by your letters that they are some loyal subjects over there. They dont bother scholars about the Queen here its hard for them to know much about her. & for learning [teaching?] them to sing. that is forgotten altogether. William is away today with a load of George's. Jamie [Jamey?] flitting up to Omagh. he has ten carts [Page 3] today, & he had a lot more asked that did not go, so there is a lot of stuff left behind We have pretty calm weather here now not near so rough as it was some time ago. There is not much work to do outside now unless to make improvements. Servants have changed places for another season. James Houston has Barney [Mours?] again. Alex Duncan has Bob Wilson & John has a fellow named McConnell. "Davy Mat" is hired with Sam McKimmon. Uncle John has no one at all & him & her is getting very old looking We were talking about them today & Mary said if they would give her all the money she would go & attend to them. but Im afraid her & Aunt would never agree Mary still keeps the notion of going some place [Page 4] Mother is for Gortin again Thursday They wanted her over this last month. but she is hard to force to go any place We have got no word from Tommy Hay yet but if he is well he will be [apt?] to write soon "Is Mrs Allison not in good health now" we have heard that she is ailing but I hope she is better by this time. Willie John Duncan gets letters from Mrs Bennett Regular [sic]. we get none from any of them. We have not got our photos from Derry yet & we are waiting on them every day We will try & send you some money this week if we dont write again Willie Gilkison will write one. we must get Willie John to write again as we have got a new dog from Master James called 'Sport' Shepherd is still living but not too healthy 'All well' No more at this time Your Sister Bella M Smyth |
