From: West Salem September 14th 1840

Dear
Father & Mother Brother and Sister
I Take time to write you a few lines Stating
that I am arived [arrived?] safe with my relations
I found them all well I Rested two weeks
with John and David at their place I then
set Out to work about 30 Miles distance from
Johns Brother Robert and I works [work?] for the one
Man Our pay is 16 Dollars per Month and found
John and David is Liveing [Living?] on their farms
Brother John Recd [received?] a Letter 8 days previous to
this date John Robert Recd [received?] a letter a few days
after we were verry [very?] happy to hear from you all and
to hear that you were all well through mercies of god
you State to us that suposing [supposing?] the Money had
went to hand you did not know how to divide it
when it all comes to your hand theris [there is?] £10 for
Aunt Nimix sent from John Roberts the Ballance [Balance?] is
For Father and Mother when the Money goes to
hand David wishes you to write to him amediately
[immediately?] after you state to us to write to you the
particulars Respecting this Country a Young man
can do Better here than in Ireland a Maicannick [Mechanic?]
can have from One Dollar to two Dollars per day
or a well handed woman can earn Money rapidly
But a Man that has got a large Family is [?]
[?] situated unless he has got £100 sterling keep [?]
when he comes here a man once he gets a
start in this country in the Farming way
can get along pritty [pretty?] well a gret [great?] deal
Better than in Ireland when once the [they?] get

the deed of their place the [they?] are seafe [safe?] no rents
atall [at all?] and every man here is Lord of his own
Soil I would not advise you to come out here
whilst the Situation you are in Sticks to you
and you to it I believe you could Better
here once your sons would be Father [Futher?] grown
I wish to mention to you that I stoped [stopped?] [2?]
days in New York with Mr William Boyd Ruth Wallaces husband
and one day with John Boyd Formey [formerly?]
of Ballinree [Ballinrees?] they were all verry [very?] kind
to me [?] stoped [stopped?] one Knight [night?] with James
Cochrane [in?] Philladelphia [Philadelphia?] I stoped [stopped?]
one Knight [night?] with Charles Ridles [Riddles?] of pitsburg
[Pittsburgh?] one Knight [night?] with John Armstrong the one
was more friendly to me than another I saw James Reed in
Pitsburg [Pittsburgh?] he was in good health I took my Tea
with him one Knight [night?]
you mention that William Caldwell wants to
hear Respecting his Brother James and Family
Likewise George McCoys Family wants to hear
how James Boyces Family is they are all well
and their Familes [Families?] John Roberts calculates to
answer his letter in a few day from now

respecting your Situation being encumbered
with my Childern but I hope the lord will
Feavour [Favour?] me with good health so as I will
be eable [able?] to make a restitution for your
trouble I wish you to keep them at School
and give them a good education I am makeing [making?]
my calculations to Remit money to you as
soon as I can get an Oppertunity [Opportunity?] to send
it seaf [safe?] I think a deal of long about
the Children were it not for the Children
and thinking about my Relations in Ireland
I could make my self in this county [country?]
it is a good country for a Single man
to make money in you want to know how
we are situated in respect to a house of worship
there is one metteing [meeting?] house 3 miles from Champion

there is a number of Metteing [Meeting?] Houses 2 miles
distance from where we work in Pensalvenia [Pennsylvania?]
Aunt Esecelea [Cecelia?] and her Family is well and getting
along well Aunt and William is liveing [living?] Kneighbour
[neighbour?] to Brother John and David in Champion
William superintends the Farm that his Brother
John had purchased when they landed John works
For the same man that we [?] his pay is
24 Dollars per month and found Jan for some
Time back has averaged 7d British per day and found
They all wish to be Remembered to you all in
the kindest man_er [manner?] My Brothers all joins me in
giveing [giving?] their love to all our relations takeing
