| Transcript | IRISH EMIGRANT PROTECTION SOCIETY - The following letter is from Private Cullen, enclosing a subscription of three pounds towards the funds of the Emigrant Protection Society - a branch of the Society of St. Vincent de Paule:- "Drogheda, 4th April, 1851 MY DEAR SIR, - I beg you to enclose 3 pounds as a small contribution to the funds of the Emigrants' Protection Society. Every one must deplore the sad circumstances which compel the inhabitants of this fine country to emigrate in such vast numbers from their cherished fatherland, and it would seem to be most desirable that means should be devised to keep them at home. But as long as misery and destitution, oppression and misrule, make it necessary for them to seek shelter and protection beyond the seas, it is well worth the charity of the Society of St.Vincent to undertake to direct their steps, and protect them from fraud and imposture. I trust that a generous public will soon supply your Society with funds to carry out its truly Christian and charitable project, on an extensive scale. - Believe me to be, with sincerest esteem, your obedient servant, Paul Cullen + James O'Ferrall, Esq. |
