Addressed to
Hon. Henry George, Jr.
87 Hamilton Place,
Manhattan.

Dear Sir:-
Though personally unacquainted with you, I take
the liberty of introducing the bearer, Mrs A.V. Smyth, the
wife of Dr Smyth, who was connected with the mint at New
Orleans at the time when a loss was discovered there some
years ago. Dr Smyth was compelled to make good this loss,
although a subordinate was suspected of being responsible.
Mrs Smyth is trying to have Congress reimburse the Doctor,
who was practically ruined by the affair and there being
no fault shown on his part, he is practically a martyr to
the political system of his time, the subordinate having
been appointed by him in the usual way; that is, through
the recommendation of his party.
Very truly yours,
Charles Doherty
