| Transcript | Mrs A Duffin Oakland London 3d June 1814 I wrote to my dear Ellen a few days since, which if she got in course will have reached Her ere this - I am perfectly aware of the distress it will occasion, and the grief of heart it will cause, But I must beg you may consult our good sense, and summon all your fortitude to encounter the stroke - The step I have taken may be considered rash & imprudent, but you may rest assured it is not without due diliberation [deliberation?], and I stand perfectly acquitted in my own mind as to the prudence of it - In my last I think I observed to you that I had pointed out to Wm (William?) some plans of occonomy (economy?) in which I am He will be seconded by Dr (Dear?) Ellen - It is my intention to be (scrupulously?) careful & to live on as little as possible, and whatever situation I may be, never to lose sight of the main object, the Interest & happiness of my Dr (Dear?) Family - At all events if is not the will of Providence to increase our store, but that is shou'd (should?) please the allwise disposer of Every thing in this world to bless our present stock, I receive great great consolation in knowing that our Dear Infants will have sufficient to establish them in the world, and to support themselves in that sphere of life to which we have been accustomed - In support of my present plans of Occonomy (Economy?) I would (would?) recommend your keeping only two Girls, and occasionally calling in the aid of some of the Mill Town Women as you may stand in need of them - But I need scarcely point out to you these matters, convinced as I am that every thing will be turned to the best account - You may be sure my dear Ellen that it required no small share of resolution & fortitude in taking this step, to deprive myself the society of my dearest Family, and all domestic comfort, and no doubt have sometimes to struggle with, & encounter some hardships, but all this I shall meet with patience in the fond hope of soon again being united to you and happy for life - This will be the last letter you will receive from me for some time intending in a few Days to sail for Halifax trusting that peace will soon take place between this Country & America, thence I shall proceed to Carolina to try if the lands I bought when there, is of any value which perhaps by this time may be something very considerable - and if it does not turn out so, I can only lose the voyage expences (expenses?) - You need be under no concern as to my safety, as with Gods assistance I shall take every Human precaution & run no risk - I have written to my sister Johnston under this date, but as these letters are to go by the Belfast traders it may be some time before you receive them - Any Letters in future to me inclose (enclose?) them to Wm (William?) Johnston 33 Mark Lane who can forward them to me every Month and by sending them to R. Grimshaw He cou'd (could?) send te (them?) by some of the Traders here which will save posta(ge?) Tell Bell & Robert I shall write to them when I can have an opportunity - poor Bell will not be the least in suffering on the present occasion - As to Elizabeth I am sure she will take every advantage of Her present situation & on coming Home at Christmass (Christmas?) will be a comfort to you - Bless the Three Infants, Ann Jane, Charles, & A.
