Dear Cousin James
In answer to your most kind
and welcome letter which I received
all right [alright?] you must excuse me for
not writing sooner but I did not
want to write till after the binch [bench?]
till I would tell you what did
happen it was the greatest day
ever was seen in Gortin the case
with Alexd [Alexander?] Reid will be a
big one yet it is left of [off?] to be tried
in omagh in March the [there?]were (sic) grate
[great?] swearing Jamey Hay was Alex (sic)
witness and Willie Noble
was Reids [Reid's?] witness
Jamey Hay did good work
for Alex but you may think
Noble [swore?] right [or?] rong [wrong?]
the losing man will pay
a bill at the end If it goes
as far as McConnels case went
the [there?] will be a fue [few?] pounds
spent the [there?] are (sic) nothing consumes the
money like the law
your father & Joney Elkin
was bales [bail?] men for
Alexd [Alexander?] Knox
so you may be thinking of
them going to Derry gale [gaol?]
about the tenth of March
the [they?] are working very hard
now Alex is ploughing very
hard Knox and Jamey Hay
is working with the spade
every day we are all busy
thank god for our health
you wanted to know if the [there?]
were any balls or soirees I must
tell you the [there?] were none
we had a grand lecture
in the meeting house last
week but Mary McConnel
is married on (sic) a brother
of Joney Caughrons he is going
to die since the wedding
he got such a feed of a
tale [tail?] of a herring.
Dear cousin James I have
no more news to tell you
only that our cousin in
Straughroy has afrounted
[affronted?] all be long [belong?]
to hir [her?] Elizzie [Lizzie?][Orr?]

the Thursday after Xmas so

of our cousins see this letter
so I have no more to say at [present?]

yours [Mary?] Duncan

To James Alex Smyth
