TranscriptAberdeen Gov. [Govenor?] General.
from Lord Ava.

Ottawa 4th December

My dear Mama
I have not written to you for a long time and am only
sending you a note now as I only arrived here last night
and in a weeks time I shall probably have alot to tell
you. I was in Montreal on my way through & stayed at
the Windsor Hotel with some people I know.
The manager is an old friend of yours Mr Swett.
There was nothing going on in Montreal as there was no
[----?], but it has come now and I hope to begin curling
& skating at once. Mr Dixon has only Kinsley [----?] me
a room in his house. He shares the [-----?] with Major
Wixtual, the husband of the lady who was Britiannia at
the ball. I should also [-----?] Hon. [honourable?] mem.
[member?] of the club so will be set up comfortably.
Lady [------?] told Mr Dixon she was going to ask me to
stay with them at first. However tommorrow I will go &
cable them. Mr Dixon has aged very little He is over 50
but he has scarcely a grey hair in his head. He seems in
good spirits, though he still has to go the the [----?].
Buildings & [------?] most of the day there. The only
other person [----?] [----?] that I have seen so far is
Mr Delvair the fur man. He was pleased to hear of you but
it didn't make him knock anything off a "coon" fur coat &
"mink" skin cap I bought. Lord Lome introduced the
"coon" coat to fashion he tells me. In your time & the
[Lau-----s?] only the cabbies wore them. Park sheel from
the little I remember is much the same. I expected to see
bigger buildings & shops. We are behind the americans in
improvements I'm afraid. I am reading from Canadian journal.
I had forgotten that you had returned from San Francisco via
Ogden, Salt Lake & Denver. I hope I told no lies about the
later places to you. But Denver they tell me has been made a
new town within the last 5 years. They call it "Queen of the
West" now. The Davis talk of coming up to Montreal later on
when I get back there. Mr D. [Davis?] is very found of
sleighing. The "Windsor" Hotel is new & is a huge place.
I suppose they would call it a banqueting hall. It will be
amusing to see the [-----?] at Govt. [government?] House.
[B--?] [-----?] I am sorry to say has gone to New York but
I expect he will be back directly.
I wish Uncle Fred would come out for a few weeks. He could
leave his family & come & live with me. We would have a
great time if he did curling & tobogganing. Will you please
ask [-----?] is he got Mr Dixons wedding present.
I must end now. I wish only you & father could be here. How
you would be [-----?]. I remain my dear Mama
Yours affectly [affectionately?] Archie.
