N.B. she struggles with money and child-rearing, husband Thomas left one day while drunk, left to look for work somewhere else; landed in Glasgow, Scotland, and stayed there for at least a year; he wanted Ada to come to him but she'd rather stay in America. When she finally made arrangements to leave for Glasgow, the baby got sick. Thomas still wanted to stay in Scotland. |
| Transcript | Oxford, Mich. [Michigan?] Sept 12th 90 My dear friend Annie I received your letter and I am ashamed of myself for not writing before. I have not been very well and we have been very busy is one reason i did not write, and another reason is I was ashamed to write and not send Thomas address as I promised for I did not wish anything harsh said to him and you said you were afraid you would write harsh [to?] [him?] for his behavior [behaviour?] forgive me Annie dear after your kindness to me to think I would do so. I will send his address but if you write do not say any thing harsh to him. The poor fellow I wish I could see him, I guess he has suffered as much if not more than I have. I have had eight letters from him since 12th Aug. he says he will come back in the spring. he would come now only it is such hard work to get a job in the winter, but he will come as soon as he can. he is very sorry for his bad behavior [behaviour?]. I wish you could get away and come and stay all night I would tell you his reasons for going away I would tell you as letters are apt to get lost before you receive them. he says I must be, and he knows I am the best woman on earth when I will forgive him after what he has done to me. He did work at night-work for a while and it did not agree with him. he was laid up with a cold for a week or so. he writes very good letters. My dear Annie my trouble has nearly killed me. I am just as nervous as I can be. Baby is well and as good as he can be. he will laugh and play quite a little I put him into short clothes the day he was three months old. I have not heard from your sister lately, never but once. You know you told us last spring that Bella's letters were like Angels visits few and far between. I have been to Oxford but three times since I saw you. I have been to Church several times. Cousin Carter from Birmingham is here, he came home with Rob last Tuesday he will go back tomorrow. Rob will stay at home now. he came up here about three weeks ago and brought Sophie with him and stayed all night that looks thin, "don't it." Dear Annie excuse me for not writing. I will try and do better How is Miss Shaw getting along give my regards to her. do you hear how the girls are doing in Detroit. This is Thomas Address. Thomas Edgar c/o Mr A.
