Transcript | EMIGRATION TO CANADA TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING TELEGRAPH SIR Lest the public should be deceived by the leader in the News-Letter of this morning, I think it necessary to inform them that the exodus from Canada to the States some years ago was of French Canadians, always fond of change, and also that last year all who had means sufficient returned to Canada, whilst thousands who have not the means are anxious to return - as a proof, an M.P. for a Quebec Constituency endeavoured to get a grant from the Parliament now in Session in Ottawa for the purpose of assisting them to return. The industrious North of Ireland emigrants prefer the Union Jack to the Stars and Stripes, and it is with them I have to do. Of the thousands sent to me, I can show any of four readers, who are desirous to know, the address in Canada of almost every emigrant. I am just after filling a ticket for a family of twelve adults sent for by friends who are settled in Thornbury, Province of Ontario, and have names of several other large families, all sent for by friends in Canada. I am also in receipt of Bills of Exchange from Sherbrook Province, Quebec, and Ottawa, Toronto, and other parts of the Province of Ontario, to pay the passages of the relatives of the senders. Whilst such letters arrive weekly, I care not what newspaper editors may write. In conclusion, if labourers hire for only the busy months it is their own fault, for they can get yearly engagements. Yours truly CHARLES FOY Canadian Government Emigration Department, Office - 11, Claremont Street, Belfast, 2nd April, 1875. |
